Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially because it contains several major reversals of the trends shown in the visual data. For instance, the student states that there was a 'significantly rose in rented accommodation and dramatically decreased in owned accommodation', which is the exact opposite of the chart's actual trends. Furthermore, data points are frequently misread or confused, such as claiming the lowest value for owned accommodation was in 1981 at 22% (whereas it was 23% in 1918) and stating that rented accommodation peaked at 78% in 1918 (which is reasonably close to 77%, but followed by contradictory statements about subsequent years). While an overview is attempted, the confusion over which trend belongs to which category limits the development of main features and comparisons.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation evident with basic paragraphing and transitional markers like 'Turning towards the details' and 'Additionally', but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is somewhat disorganised, mixing disparate points about different categories within the same section. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as starting sentences with disconnected transition phrases. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logical development of the comparisons between owned and rented housing over the decades.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are numerous spelling errors ('chrt', 'compaired', 'maximun', 'slighest', 'bulid', 'Egland') and awkward word choices ('people themself', 'paying house rent', 'value of rented houses', 'slighest fell'). The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'escalated' and 'stabilized', but noticeable errors in word form, collocation, and spelling cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple constructions and faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors, including severe errors in subject-verb agreement and tense usage (e.g., 'the bar chrt compaired', 'it was remain constant', 'it was remained stable', 'people bulid themself was lowest'). Articles and prepositions are also misused frequently. These persistent errors can cause considerable difficulty and confusion for the reader in interpreting the intended meaning.
