Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response identifies the chart’s subject and mentions several years, but its reporting of the data is substantially inaccurate, so the main trends are not reliably conveyed. In particular, it reverses the 1918 figures: ownership was about 23%, while renting was about 77%, not the other way around. It also says renting increased to about 58% in 1961, although it fell to roughly 59%, and claims renting was below 30% in 2011, when it was about 36%. The overview that both rates change “every year” is too general and misses the central pattern: ownership rose overall to a peak around 2001 before declining, while renting followed the opposite trend. Select the key turning points and report them accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some chronological organisation, with the response moving from 1918 through to 2011, and phrases such as “In 1981” and “In the last year” help signal time. However, the information is largely presented as one long, run-on sequence, making comparisons and changes difficult to follow. Linking expressions such as “similarly,” “in the same way,” and “again in the same process” are repetitive or do not clearly express the relationship between the figures. The final summary also repeats a vague point rather than bringing the main trends together. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and details, and group the years into clear stages, such as the rise in ownership and its later fall.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “percentages,” “owned accommodation,” “rented accommodation,” and “rate,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, vocabulary is repetitive, and several phrases are imprecise or unnatural, such as “both accommodations were equal to each other,” “stand on 50%,” and “in the same process.” The repeated misspelling of “accommodation” also detracts from accuracy. More precise chart language would help distinguish a rise, fall, peak, and stable period, while avoiding repeated use of “rate.” For example, describe the figures as “the proportion of households” and say that ownership “reached” or “peaked at” a particular level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to describe a sequence of years and make comparisons, but sentence control is weak. Many clauses run together without full stops, as in the passage beginning “In 1939 to 1953,” and this makes the relationships between ideas unclear. Verb forms are often inaccurate: “owned accommodation increased” does not fit the intended 1918 figure, while “was stand 60%” and “was stand above 60%” are not grammatical constructions. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, including “the both accommodation rate.” Use shorter, complete sentences with a consistent past tense, for example: “In 1981, ownership stood at 60%, whereas renting accounted for 40%.”
