Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends shown in the chart comparing owned and rented accommodation between 1918 and 2011. While key data points are mentioned, such as the peak of rented accommodation in 1918 (77%) and the crossover point in 1971 (50%), there are several inaccuracies in reporting the data. For example, the student states that for the years 1961 and 1981 rented accommodation was 'almost 59% and 40%' (which is mostly correct), but struggles with precise figures and comparisons elsewhere. An overview is absent, which is a crucial requirement for achieving a Band 6 or higher in Academic Task 1. Ideas are presented, but the lack of a clear summary of overall trends and instances of imprecise data reporting keep this at Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into two brief paragraphs, attempting to separate rented and owned accommodation. However, the organization lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and sometimes misused, such as the abrupt transitions using 'While lowest was in the year...' and 'During the years 1939 1953 and 1661 there was a bit growth...'. Referencing and logical sequencing are weak, making the flow somewhat disjointed. Paragraphing is also inadequate, as the text would benefit from a dedicated introduction/overview paragraph and better separation of data points. These limitations place the response firmly at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student's vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like 'households', 'rented', 'owned', 'accommodation', and 'numbers'. There are numerous spelling and word-form errors throughout the text, including 'illistrations' instead of 'illustrations', 'accomodation' (repeatedly misspelled), 'highes' instead of 'highest', and 'alost' instead of 'almost'. Furthermore, phrasing such as 'the most households that were rented' is awkward and unnatural. The lexical range is limited and barely adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic past tense forms. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The following illistrations shows...', 'The houshold in owned accomodation were...'), missing articles (e.g., 'in year 1991'), and faulty prepositional use. Punctuation is also problematic, with missing spaces after periods and commas (e.g., '1918 and 2011.According', '1939 1953 and 1661'). Attempts at more complex structures are inaccurate and awkward. Due to the high frequency of basic grammatical errors and limited structural range, a band score of 4.5 or 5.0 is warranted, with 5.0 reflecting that communication is still achieved despite the errors.
