Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households owning and renting accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, most people prefered to stay in a rented house at the beginning but this trend gradually decline with the period, while owning a house is not popular among england's people in the starting years, the trend had increase with the time. However, reverse trend had been observed.
On the one side, 75% of people were living in rented house in 1918 which decreased to nearly 70% in 1938 and remain stable for 25 years, while the numbers kept felling and reached at 50% in 1971. Moreover, the proportion reducing and stood at around 30%, the lowest of the time and slightly rose and landed at 35%.
On the other side, in 1918, people with their own houses were roughly 22%, the samllest proportion of the period. The numbers dramtically surged up and landed at 50% in 1971 and the proportion inclined to 70% in 2001 then reduced by 5% and finished at 65% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You provide a clear overview of the main opposing trends: renting declines while ownership rises, and you identify the crossover at 50% in 1971. The response also selects relevant start, peak and end figures, such as renting at about 75% initially and ownership reaching around 70% in 2001. These features address the task well. Some details are imprecise: the chart gives 1939, not 1938, and ownership peaks at about 69% in 2001 rather than 70%, before ending at 64%. The overview’s claim that people “prefered” renting also interprets household figures as personal preference. Keep the overview focused on the proportions and report the years and values more accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: introduction, overview, and separate descriptions of renting and ownership. This makes the two series easy to compare, and phrases such as “On the one side” and “On the other side” signal the shift between them. The progression is generally logical, but some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Moreover, the proportion reducing and stood at around 30%” does not clearly identify the year or connect the later rise to 2011. The overview also repeats the same contrast in several forms. To strengthen cohesion, use more precise time references and connect changes directly, for example, “After reaching 50% in 1971, renting fell to about 31% in 2001, then rose to 36%.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “decreased,” “stable,” “surged,” and “reduced,” and the meaning is generally recoverable. However, the range and control are uneven, with several noticeable spelling and word-choice problems: “prefered,” “felling,” “samllest,” and “dramtically.” Some expressions are also unnatural for describing statistical data, such as “landed at” and “the numbers kept felling.” “People prefered to stay in a rented house” overstates what the chart shows; it records accommodation patterns, not preferences. Aim for accurate collocations such as “the figure fell to” or “the proportion remained stable,” and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses linked with “while” and “which,” and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, control is inconsistent: errors occur in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction. Examples include “this trend gradually decline,” “the trend had increase,” and “the proportion reducing and stood,” where the verb forms do not fit the sentence. The overview sentence beginning “while owning a house is not popular…” also joins ideas awkwardly and shifts tense. Use past simple consistently for the historical data (“declined,” “increased,” “remained”), and make each comparison a complete sentence with a clear subject and verb. More accurate sentence patterns would make your range easier to understand.
