Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrate the percentage of households owning and renting accomodation in England and Wales between 1918 to 2011.
Overall, in the starting years, the proportion of the households in owned accommodation were the lowest figure while rented accommodation was at the highest category. By the change in time this proportion was changed.
In 1918, almost 22% people owned accomodation whereas, 78% households were in rented accommodation. This was the highest figure throughout the chart. Almost same pattern was seen in the later three years in households in owned accommodation. It increased gradually by the years 1939, 1953 and 1961. On the other hand, the proportion of rented accommodation was decreased by the years 1939, 1953 and 1961.
In the middle of the years, both accommodation were at 50%. After that, the proportion of owned accommodation was increased by the entire years in contrast, the figure for rented accommodation was dip slightly. In 1991, 69% of households owned their accommodation while only 32% people were in rented accommodation. This ration was approximately same in the year 2001. In the last year, households in owned accommodation were almost 64% whereas, 35% people were in rented accommodation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the chart’s overall shift from renting to owning and include relevant comparisons across the period. The opening figures are close to the chart, and you correctly note the equal 50% shares in 1971 and the later rise in ownership. However, the overview is vague: “By the change in time this proportion was changed” does not clearly state that ownership generally rose while renting fell, before both moved slightly in the opposite direction by 2011. Some details are also imprecise: ownership was about 68% in 1991 and 69% in 2001, not 69% in 1991; the two series were approximately stable from 1939 to 1953 rather than increasing or decreasing. Make the overview explicit and check each year’s figures and trend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and paragraphs describing the earlier and later years. The chronological sequence helps the reader follow the chart, and contrasts such as “On the other hand” and “In contrast” signal comparisons. However, progression is sometimes weakened by unclear references and mechanical linking. For example, “This proportion” and “This ration” do not make it clear which figures or years are being compared, while “By the change in time” is not an effective transition. The final paragraph also combines several stages without clearly separating the peak period from the 2011 reversal. Use more precise references to ownership and renting, and organise the details into clear early and later trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for describing charts, including “proportion,” “increased gradually,” “whereas,” and “in contrast,” so the main information remains understandable. There is some repetition of “proportion” and “accommodation,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “highest category,” “both accommodation,” and “this ration.” Spelling errors in “accomodation” and “ration” also reduce accuracy. Aim for a more precise range of chart language, such as “share,” “percentage,” “peaked,” and “declined,” while keeping the wording natural. Check spelling and use “households” consistently rather than switching to “people,” since the chart reports household percentages.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including comparisons with “whereas” and “while,” and most sentences communicate the intended trend. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly subject–verb agreement and verb forms: “The bar chart illustrate” should be “illustrates,” and “the proportion … was decreased” is better expressed as “decreased.” The overview sentence “the proportion … were the lowest figure” also has agreement problems, and “both accommodation were at 50%” needs a plural construction such as “both types of accommodation were at 50%.” Punctuation around clauses is occasionally faulty, as in “In contrast, the figure …” where a comma or full stop is needed before the contrast. Review agreement and tense consistency in each sentence.
