Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two categories and give a broad overview of the opposing trends: ownership generally rose while renting declined. Several key figures are also close to the chart, including about 75% renting in 1918 and the equal 50% shares in 1971. However, coverage is partial and some details are inaccurate or unclear. The statement that the two categories were both “upto 68” from 1939 to 1953 confuses the rented figure with ownership, which was about 32%. You also write “In 1917” instead of 1971, and the overview misses the peak in ownership in 2001 followed by a fall in 2011. Select the main turning points and compare them accurately to make the summary more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has separate paragraphs and a recognisable order: an introduction, an overview, and then details. This gives the reader some structure. However, progression is weakened by repeated information and unclear links between ideas. The overview says the trends increased and decreased, and the final paragraph repeats the starting and ending figures without developing a new comparison. Several sentences begin with “While,” as fragments, and “Then hired house ratio decreased slowly” does not specify the period or connect clearly to the figures that follow. Organise the body chronologically or group the two series together, and use complete sentences with clear references to years and percentages. This would make the relationships between the data easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “decreased gradually,” and “increased,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing this chart. “Purchased and lease their houses” does not accurately describe household tenure, while “hired accommodations” and “rented out” are unsuitable for households living in rented homes. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “accomodations” and “aprox.” Use consistent terms such as “owner-occupied homes” and “rented accommodation,” and choose precise trend language such as “rose,” “fell,” or “remained stable.” This will improve clarity and reduce repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentence forms, including “While very small proportion have bought houses for their own use,” but complex constructions are often incomplete or faulty. For example, “Overall, there were large number of people have rented” combines incompatible verb patterns and has an article error; “While, The purchased houses ratio were increased” is also a fragment with incorrect agreement and verb form. Other problems include “the percentage … were same” and the incorrect year reference “In 1917.” Most sentences therefore require the reader to work through grammatical errors, even though the general meaning can often be recovered. Practise writing complete subject–verb sentences, controlling past-tense descriptions, and joining contrast clauses without leaving “while” clauses unfinished.
