Student answer (Band 5.0)

The chart illustrates the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

The chart shows two colours black and grey, black color represent the households in rented accommodation meanwhile, the grey color gives the information about the households in ownd accommodation. The data gives the idea about different years in which the above explained accommodation owned or rented.

The chart also eleborates the percentage of households, and the maximum percentage of the chart is 80%. The households in rented trend is gradually decreases in different years but on the other hand the trend about households in owned accommodation is increases from 1918 to 2001, but between 2001 and 2011 the same trend is decreases.

Both trends are same in 1971 on about 50%, but in 1953 and 1939 the households in owned accommodation is less then half by the households in rented accommodation. In the year of 2001 the same trend occure but in the opposite in nature.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report its central pattern: ownership generally rises while renting falls, with both reaching 50% in 1971 and ownership turning down after 2001. These are relevant features and the comparison between the two categories is useful. However, the account is only partial and several important details are missing: for example, ownership peaks at about 69% in 2001, while renting reaches its low of about 31%, before both move in the opposite direction by 2011. The statement that the maximum percentage is 80% confuses the chart’s scale with the data. Develop the overview around the crossover and the late reversal, and support it with accurate key figures rather than describing the colours and chart mechanics.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it begins by introducing the chart, then describes broad trends and ends with comparisons between selected years. Linking phrases such as “on the other hand” and “but” show an attempt to connect contrasting information. However, the progression is not consistently clear, and the second paragraph spends space explaining the colours and what the chart presents rather than advancing the summary. Some connections are awkward or unclear, particularly “In the year of 2001 the same trend occure but in the opposite in nature,” which leaves the comparison difficult to follow. Use a clear overview paragraph followed by one or two paragraphs organised by trend or period, and make each reference explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “percentage,” “households,” “owned accommodation,” and “rented accommodation,” so the reader can identify the subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. Phrases such as “the chart also eleborates,” “the above explained accommodation,” and “the same trend occure” are not natural ways to describe data. There are also spelling errors, including “ownd” and “eleborates,” and repeated use of “trend” without more precise alternatives. Build a small set of accurate reporting expressions, such as “the proportion of households,” “rose steadily,” “declined,” and “reversed slightly,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast between the two trends, and the main message is usually recoverable. However, errors are frequent, especially in subject–verb agreement and verb forms: “the households in rented trend is gradually decreases” and “the trend … is increases” combine incompatible forms. Other examples include “the households in owned accommodation is less” and “the same trend occure.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need more control; the long sentence beginning “The chart also eleborates…” contains several ideas joined loosely. Practise reliable patterns such as “The proportion of rented households decreased, while ownership increased” and “Both figures were approximately 50% in 1971.”
