IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The illustration gives information about the household and rented accomodation in England and Wales 1918 to 2011. Overall, from the given data rented accomodation significantly decreased and household in owned accomodation soared. Thus, at one point both were equal to eachother.

It is quite evident from the bar graph which showed relationship between the % of household and years. In 1918, households in owned accomodation increased with the passage of time and thus, at the start owned property proportion were smaller than rented one. As the years pass it ratio start increasing and reached 30% in 1939 and remained constant until 1953. In contrast, rented property proportion was 69% in 1939 and remained same until 1953 and then start decreaing.

Furthermore, there is only one time in 1971 both accommodations were eqaul and showed the digit of 50%. After that, property ownership significantly increased and rented one decreased and showed the percentage of 37% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main contrast and give a clear overview: ownership rises overall while renting falls, and the two figures meet at 50% in 1971. Several reported values are broadly accurate, including ownership at about 30% in 1939 and the equal proportions in 1971. However, the account is selective and some key stages are underdeveloped: it does not report the continued rise in ownership to around 68–69% in 1991–2001, followed by a fall to 64% in 2011. The final rented figure is given as 37%, rather than approximately 36%. The overview and relevant comparisons are established, but fuller coverage of the later fluctuations and more precise reporting would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure, with an overview followed by paragraphs describing the earlier and later years. Sequencing phrases such as “In contrast” and “Furthermore” help signal comparisons, and the reader can follow the broad movement from renting towards ownership. However, progression is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, “In 1918, households in owned accommodation increased with the passage of time” combines a single year with a trend, while “Thus” does not clearly show the relationship between the preceding points. The final paragraph also gives only a brief account of the later period. Organise the figures into clearer time stages and use linking expressions only where the relationship is explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “decreased,” “increased,” “remained constant,” and “proportion,” so the main information is understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive. “Household and rented accommodation” does not clearly name the two categories, and “property ownership … showed the percentage” is an awkward way to report a figure. There are also spelling errors, including “accomodation,” “decreaing,” and “eqaul,” which reduce accuracy. Use the chart’s category labels consistently—“owner-occupied households” and “rented households”—and choose precise trend language such as “rose,” “fell,” or “remained stable.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including the contrast in “After that, property ownership significantly increased and rented one decreased.” The overall meaning is generally recoverable, but some grammatical errors affect clarity. For example, “household in owned accomodation soared” has a singular/plural agreement problem, and “at the start owned property proportion were smaller” has faulty agreement and sentence structure. Verb forms are also inconsistent in “as the years pass it ratio start increasing” and “then start decreaing.” Articles and pronouns are sometimes missing or unclear, as in “both accommodations were equal.” Aim for consistent past-tense reporting and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries when combining trends.
