IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
The bar chart compares the ratios of domestic units that were used by owners of houses and rental entities of whales and england in years between 1918 and 2011 respectively.
It is obvious from chart that the use of household items in rental apartments declined with the passage of time, and increased by landlords .
In year 1918 approximately 75% people in rented flats used households. This trend decreased. In 1971 the no. of people using these items become equal to those living in owned houses.
Firstly, the trend of using households by landlords was not upto the mark. This went high and high in year between 19118 and 2001.but we can see from chart that there is again decline in this trend
There is a single year between all this, when home based items were equally used by both two type of residents living in England and Whales ,that is 50%people . Rest of chart shows derease or increase to some extent.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the broad contrast between ownership and renting and notes the crossover in 1971, which is a relevant central feature. However, the account is only partially accurate and developed: it says renting declined and ownership increased, but gives almost no reliable figures beyond approximately 75% rented in 1918 and the 50% crossover. The chart shows ownership rising from about 23% to a peak of 69% in 2001 before falling to 64% in 2011, while renting follows the reverse pattern and then rises to 36%. The statement that the trend went “high and high” until 2001 is vague, and “use of household items” misrepresents what is measured. Select the two series clearly and report their main stages and endpoint changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction, followed by a general trend and then further observations. The reference to the equal proportions in 1971 also gives the reader one clear point of comparison. However, the ideas are not arranged into a coherent account of the chart: the discussion shifts between “rental apartments,” “landlords,” and “home based items,” making the relationships between points difficult to follow. Connectors such as “Firstly” do not introduce a clearly distinct stage, and the final sentence, “Rest of chart shows derease or increase to some extent,” does not add specific information. Use a clear overview followed by chronological comparisons, with each paragraph focused on one series or the shared trend.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses a small set of relevant terms, including “declined,” “increased,” “rented,” and “owned,” so the general direction of change can sometimes be understood. However, vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate for this chart, which makes the description unclear. “Use of household items” and “home based items” refer to possessions rather than accommodation, while “landlords” does not mean households living in owned accommodation. Phrases such as “went high and high” and “not upto the mark” are informal or unsuitable for describing data. Spelling and word-form errors, including “Whales,” “derease,” and “no.,” also weaken precision. Use standard terms such as “households,” “owner-occupied accommodation,” “rented accommodation,” “proportion,” and “peaked.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response includes some complete simple sentences and attempts longer structures, for example, “In year 1918 approximately 75% people in rented flats used households.” The main trend and the 1971 comparison remain partly understandable. However, grammatical control is uneven: articles and prepositions are often missing (“In year 1918,” “from chart”), and sentence construction is faulty in “In 1971 the no. of people using these items become equal to those living in owned houses.” Tense and agreement also need attention, including “become” where a past form is required. Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, and the final sentence is a fragment-like, unclear summary. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete comparison structures, such as “The proportion of owner-occupiers reached 50% in 1971, matching the figure for renters.”
