IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given bar chart compares the proportions of households in owner-occupied and rented accommodations in England and Wales between 1918 and 2018.

Overall, it is clear that the proportions of owner-occupied and rented accommodation changed considerably over the period. In the earlier years, rented accommodation accounted for the larger proportion, whereas home ownership became more common in the later years.

To begin with, in 1918, rented accomodation accounted for approximately 78% of households, Whereas only 22% owned their homes. The proportions relatively remained stable in 1939,1953. A drastically downfall of rented can be seen in 1961 and higher in owned accomodation.

Moving further, 1971 was the only year where both participants met each other at one position, along with in next years dramtically all people prefer to but their own flats rather than to live in rented. In the last year 2011, almost 65% of people adopted to stay in their owned flats while only 38% individuals stayed in rented accommodation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the chart’s broad pattern accurately: renting was more common at the start, ownership rose over time, and the two shares met in 1971. The opening figures and the final comparison are also close to the chart. However, the task is described as covering 1918–2011, not 1918–2018, and the overview could be more precise by noting that ownership peaked in 2001 before falling in 2011. Some details are unclear or inaccurate: the shares were stable in both 1939 and 1953, while the sharp change occurred across several later years, not simply “in 1961.” The claim that “all people” preferred buying is an overgeneralisation, since renting remained a substantial share. Select and report the main stages more clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction and overview are followed by two detail paragraphs, and phrases such as “To begin with” and “Moving further” help signal progression. The reader can follow the broad movement from renting to ownership. This is a coherent arrangement, but some links between ideas are awkward or unclear. For example, “A drastically downfall of rented can be seen in 1961 and higher in owned accommodation” does not clearly explain the relationship between the two series, and “along with in next years” makes the sequence difficult to follow. Grouping the figures into clear stages—early stability, the crossover, the rise to the 2001 peak, and the final reversal—would make progression more precise. Use linking expressions to show relationships, not just to announce a new paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “proportions,” “households,” “owner-occupied,” and “accounted for,” so the main subject is generally clear. There are also attempts at more descriptive language, such as “changed considerably.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “participants met each other” is unsuitable for two data series, “adopted to stay” does not express the intended meaning, and “drastically downfall” is not a natural phrase. “Prefer to buy their own flats” also introduces an unsupported preference and is less precise than describing the chart’s percentages. Spelling slips such as “accomodation” and “dramtically” further reduce control. Aim for accurate chart language such as “the figures converged,” “the proportion declined,” and “households owned their homes.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the overview sentence beginning “In the earlier years” and the final comparison using “while.” Meaning is usually recoverable, but control is inconsistent, and several sentences contain errors in structure or punctuation. For example, “The proportions relatively remained stable in 1939,1953” has awkward adverb placement and missing spacing after the comma; “A drastically downfall … and higher in owned accommodation” is not a complete, well-formed sentence; and “along with in next years dramtically all people prefer” has an unclear grammatical structure. Capitalisation after “Whereas” is also incorrect. Practise complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and use past-tense forms consistently when describing the historical data.
