IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart below compares the percentages of the owned and rented households in England and Wales between the time frame of 1918 and 2011.
Overall, it is evident that in the year 1971 the percentage of households in rented and owned accommodations became equal. In the initial years rented households were more as compared to the owned ones. However, this percentage decreased gradually as the households in owned accommodation started to increase.
A more precise examination of the bar chart depicts that in the starting year 1918 the percentage of the rented property was between 70 and 80% nevertheless, owned accommodation was realitively low in percentage of about 20% approximately. This percentage of rented property started to experience a decline in the upcoming years while the percentage of owned accommodations rose gradually. In the year 1971 both kinds of accommodations were equal with a percentage of 50% exactly. We can observe that as the percentage of households in rented accommodation increased, the percentage of households in owned accommodations decreased simaltaneously. In the final year 2011, the rented property percentage was nearly 40% while the owned accommodations percentage was much high somewhere between 60% and 70%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main long-term pattern: renting is more common at the start, ownership rises, and the two figures meet in 1971. The opening and overview therefore address the chart’s central comparison. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: in 2011, ownership is about 64% and renting about 36%, not ownership “somewhere between 60% and 70%” paired with renting “nearly 40%” as if both were rising; the chart shows a slight reversal after 2001. The statement that rented accommodation increased as ownership decreased is also misleading for the whole period, since renting generally declined until 2001 before rising. Include key intermediate figures or stages to make the account more precise and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement, moving from an introduction and overview to details about the beginning, midpoint and end of the period. This makes the main comparison easy to follow. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “However,” and “In the final year” help signal the progression. At times, though, the connections are mechanical or the references are unclear. For example, “This percentage” could refer to either ownership or renting, and the sentence about rented accommodation increasing while ownership decreased does not clearly distinguish the general trend from the late-period change. Organise the details into clearer phases and use explicit labels such as “the ownership share” and “the rental share” to strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing a chart, including “compares,” “decline,” “rose gradually,” and “equal.” These choices communicate the broad trends, and some variation avoids excessive repetition. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for this task: “the percentage of the rented property,” “households were more,” and “much high” do not describe the data accurately or idiomatically. There are also spelling errors in “realitively” and “simaltaneously.” Aim for standard chart language and consistent terms such as “the proportion of households renting” and “the ownership rate.” This would make your descriptions more precise while retaining the useful range already shown.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “as the households in owned accommodation started to increase,” and most sentences remain understandable. This shows a sound grammatical foundation, with some evidence of the wider control expected at the next level. Some errors persist, however. In “in the starting year 1918 the percentage of the rented property was…,” the article and sentence construction are awkward; “in 1918, the proportion of households renting was…” is clearer. “Both kinds of accommodations were equal with a percentage of 50%” also has an unclear grammatical relationship between the subjects and the percentage. Check article use, plural forms, and sentence punctuation, and vary structures while keeping comparisons grammatically explicit.
