Student answer (Band 5.0)

The Chart below shows the percentage of households owned and rented by the people of England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. Pattren in chart shows that there is a gradual downfall in households renting the accommodation from about 78% to 35% while househoulds owning the accommodation has increased from 23% peaking at 69% then moving down to 65%. In 1918 there was about 55% difference between owned and rented accommodation which then decreased and levelup in 1971 at 50%. Then in 1981 households owning the accommodation increased by 10% while households renting the accommodation decraesed by 10%. After a decade people owning the accommodation have steady growth and people renting the accommodation have steady decline. At the start of 21st century there is a slight shift in trend from 2001 to 2011 where accommodation owned households are decreased by 3% to 4% and households owning the accommodation increased by 4%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main opposing trends and the point where ownership and renting meet: ownership rises from about 23% to a peak near 69%, while renting falls, and both are around 50% in 1971. However, the response is short of the required 150 words, at 143 words, and the overview and comparisons are not fully developed. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: ownership is about 64% in 2011, not 65%, and the final sentence reverses the categories, saying owned households decreased while rented households increased. The claim that ownership grew steadily after 1981 also overlooks the near-stability from 1991 to 2001 and the later fall. Add a clearer overview and report the final-period changes accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response follows a broadly chronological order, moving from the overall pattern to 1918, the crossover in 1971, and later years. This gives the reader some structure, and phrases such as “while” help compare the two categories. However, the information is presented as one continuous paragraph without a clear separation between overview and supporting details, and the progression becomes difficult to follow in places. For example, “After a decade” does not clearly identify the year, while the final sentence repeats the trend but reverses which category rose or fell. Use distinct overview and detail sections, and connect each comparison to a specific year so that the sequence is clearer and less repetitive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “peaking,” “difference,” “increased,” and “decline,” so the main trends can generally be understood. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “Pattren,” “househoulds,” “levelup,” and “decraesed.” Some expressions are also awkward, such as “households owned and rented by the people” and “accommodation owned households.” Prefer concise, accurate collocations such as “households in owner-occupied accommodation” and “the proportion of rented households.” Check spelling carefully and avoid repeating “households owning the accommodation” when a shorter, clearer phrase is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, including comparisons with “while” and a time clause beginning “where.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to interpret. For example, “The Chart below shows the percentage of households owned and rented” is missing a grammatical link such as “living in”; “households owning the accommodation has increased” has subject–verb disagreement; and “accommodation owned households are decreased” uses an incorrect verb construction. The final sentence also makes the relationships between the two categories unclear. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and use active forms such as “the proportion of owner-occupied homes fell” alongside clear comparative clauses.
