Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households owned and rented accomodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. Looking at the overall perspective, it is apparent that the proportion of rented accomodation was decreased with the passage of time, while ownership of accomodation was increased as the time passed.
To begin with, the percentage of households in owned accomodation was accounted for approximately 22% in 1918 after it was steadily increased with time duration and reached at 50% in 1971. Moreover, the the rate of own house rose and reached at just under 70% in 2001, and then it dropped down slightly to approximately 63% in 2011.
The trends of rented accomodation was at nearly 78% in 1918 and then it reached to 68% in 1939 and remained same for one decade. In addition, it declined to just under 60% in 1961 after that reached to nearly to 31% in 2001. Furthermore, the trends of rented accomodation slightly improved in 2011 to nearly 37%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the chart’s main contrast accurately: ownership generally rises while renting falls, and you note the shared 50% point in 1971 as well as the slight reversal by 2011. The figures you select are broadly consistent with the chart, including ownership at about 22% in 1918 and just under 70% in 2001. This gives the response a clear overview and relevant supporting detail. To make the report more fully developed, include the important plateau in ownership between 1939 and 1953, and make the overall comparison more explicit—for example, that the two categories move in opposite directions and meet in 1971. Some descriptions, such as “with the passage of time,” are general where a precise trend summary would be stronger.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response is arranged in a clear sequence: an introduction and overview are followed by separate paragraphs for ownership and renting. This makes the two series easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” help signal additional details. The organisation is coherent overall, but cohesion is not always smooth: “after that reached to nearly to 31%” leaves the subject unclear, and several transitions (“To begin with,” “In addition”) feel mechanical rather than showing a precise relationship between figures. Improve progression by grouping comparable stages across both series, and use clearer references such as “the figure” or “this proportion” to avoid repeating “the trends of rented accommodation.”
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “declined,” “remained,” and “slightly,” so the main trends are understandable. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “the rate of own house” is unclear, “the trends of rented accommodation was” is not a natural way to describe a percentage, and “improved” suggests a positive judgement rather than a rise. There are also spelling errors in “accomodation” and repeated use of “reached.” Aim for precise, neutral reporting language and check spelling. Alternatives such as “the share of households owning their homes” and “rose to” would make the descriptions more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses linked with “while,” “after,” and “and then,” and the overall meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with verb forms and agreement: “the proportion … was decreased” and “ownership … was increased” should use active forms such as “decreased” and “increased”; “The trends … was” also has a subject–verb agreement problem. Other patterns, including “reached at 50%” and “after that reached,” need more accurate sentence construction. Use a consistent past tense for the historical data, check singular and plural subjects, and punctuate longer sentences so that each trend is expressed in a complete clause.
