Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given illustration depicts accommodations which are owned and rented in England and Wales in years 1918 and 2011.

Overall, it is evident from the chart that from the beginning of the time rented housholds accommodation is dominated over the households in owned accommodation as it shows upward trend as compared to rented houses w

1918 to 1971 people had rented accommodation, but it strats to decrease with every year as in 1918, it is approximately near three quarters but in 1971, it reaches to a half. On the other hand, accommodation of owned houses is increased steadily fom 20% to 50% withen 53 years.

1981 is a turning point of trend as from here owned households accommodation is begun to climb and rented accommodation is plummeted. Rented households accommodation goes down to 30% in year of 2011, whereas owned households goes up to nearly 70% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the broad comparison between ownership and renting and report several relevant figures, including renting at about three quarters in 1918 and both categories at 50% in 1971. However, the overview is unclear and unfinished: it says renting “is dominated” and then breaks off at “as compared to rented houses w,” so the main overall pattern is not clearly summarised. The description also misstates the later trend: ownership rises to a peak of about 69% in 2001, then falls to 64% in 2011, while renting rises from 31% to 36%; it does not continue climbing or fall to 30% in 2011. The response is also two words below the required minimum. Include a complete overview and report the final reversal accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details about earlier and later years. The sequence is generally understandable, and phrases such as “On the other hand” signal a comparison. However, the overview sentence is incomplete and ends abruptly, which interrupts progression and leaves the central message unclear. The time grouping is also confusing: “1918 to 1971” is followed by a claim about a turning point in 1981, although the two series actually meet in 1971 and ownership continues to rise until 2001. Use a complete overview, organise the body into clear time periods, and connect each comparison explicitly to the relevant years.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “upward trend,” “turning point,” “steadily,” and “approximately,” which helps convey changes in the chart. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “accommodations which are owned and rented,” “rented households accommodation,” and “owned households accommodation.” These make the description less natural and sometimes harder to follow. There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “housholds,” “strats,” “fom,” and “withen.” Prefer concise chart language such as “the proportion of households in rented accommodation” and “home ownership,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary for rises, falls, peaks, and reversals would help you describe the data clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a mixture of simple and complex sentences, for example, “On the other hand, accommodation of owned houses is increased steadily…” and “1981 is a turning point… as from here…”. However, errors are frequent and sometimes make the relationships between ideas difficult to understand. The overview is an incomplete sentence, and verb forms are often faulty: “is increased,” “is begun to climb,” and “is plummeted” should use appropriate active past forms such as “increased,” “began to climb,” and “plummeted.” There are also problems with articles, number, and sentence construction in phrases such as “in year of 2011” and “owned households goes up.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build complete sentences before adding complex clauses.
