Student answer (Band 6.0)
This bar chart compares the average of housholds in owned and rented accomodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall , during the given period rented houses wintessed a drasctic decerase in contrast with owned accomodation which experienced a significant growth during the same period. Only during one year, rented and private houses were equal.
Initially , self-owned houses indicated low rates (just over 20% of households in 1918) then it showed a gradual increase during the next period to reach its peak at alomost 70% of households in 2001 before a slight fall in the final year (approximatly 65% of households).
On the other hand, in England and wales in 1918 people tend to rent houses (approximatly 75% of households were rented ) but then this trend showed a decrease to stabilise in 1971 in 50% of households were rented equally to the average of owned accomodations .Then,it continued to drop to raech the lowest level at just over 30% in 2001 before experiencing a sligh increase to reach approximalty the half of the initial value in the last year (nearly 36% of households) .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response identifies the chart’s central pattern accurately: ownership rises overall while renting declines, and the two figures meet at 50% in 1971. It also selects useful details, including the ownership peak in 2001 and the subsequent fall, as well as the small reversal in renting by 2011. These points provide a clear overview and relevant support. Some descriptions are imprecise, however: ownership reaches about 69% in 2001, rather than “almost 70%” (a reasonable approximation), and renting reaches its lowest point in 2001 before rising, not simply a “slight increase” without a clear comparison. The phrase “half of the initial value” is also an unclear way to describe 36%. More precise comparisons would strengthen an otherwise well-focused summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing ownership and renting. The contrastive opening “On the other hand” helps signal the shift between the two series, and the chronology is generally easy to follow. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. However, several transitions are mechanical or awkward, such as “then,” “but then,” and “before,” while punctuation around them is inconsistent. The long final paragraph also packs several stages into one sentence, making the sequence harder to process. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary linking devices so that comparisons and time changes are connected more smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The response uses relevant chart vocabulary, including “gradual increase,” “peak,” “slight fall,” “stabilise,” and “decrease,” so the main trends are understandable. However, the range is limited by repeated general terms such as “houses” and “trend,” and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “average of households” does not describe the chart, “witnessed a decrease” is unnatural here, and “self-owned houses” is not the clearest label for the data. Spelling errors such as “housholds,” “accomodation,” “drasctic,” and “approximatly” are noticeable and reduce precision. Aim for accurate, conventional terms such as “proportion of households,” “home ownership,” and “rented accommodation,” and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response attempts a mixture of simple and more complex sentences, including time clauses and contrastive structures. Most of the intended meaning can be followed, but errors recur in sentence construction and punctuation. For example, “then it showed a gradual increase … to reach its peak” has an unclear subject reference, while “to stabilise in 1971 in 50% of households were rented” combines incompatible structures. The sentence beginning “On the other hand” also contains a run-on sequence, with missing spaces after full stops and commas. There are problems with articles and grammatical patterns in phrases such as “in 50% of households.” Build shorter, controlled sentences first, then check that each clause has a clear subject and verb and that punctuation separates complete ideas.
