Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph shows the percentages of households in England and Wales. It describes the percentages of houses those are owned as well as of those are rented. This data provides information from the year 1918 to 2011. The X axis shows the respectove years and y axis shows the percenatges of households. In 1918 , in England and Wales, 20% pf the houses were owned by people and 75% of houses were rented. It shows the amximum number of people uswd to live on rent.
in 1939, 68% of people lived on rent and 32% percent lived in their own house. It shows an increase in the number of owned houses.
In 1953, number of persons living in rented home and own homes remained at almost 68% and 32% respectively.
In 1961 the people living in rented home decreased and perxenatge dropped to 58% and people started living in own houses and its percentages increased to 41%.
In 1971, percentage of people living in own houses and rented houses became equal to 50%. In 1981, people started to live in their own houses and percentage of rented houses decreased to 40 and for own houses it became 60%.
in 1991 and 2001, percenatge of people living in own houses increased to 68% and for rented houses it became 31%.
According to data, in 2011,again the people started to live in rented housed and its percentage increased to 32 and for own houses it became 37%.
The graphs probably shows the inflation that decreased since 1918 to 2001 and then again started to increase since 2011, so many people canot afford their own houses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the chart’s subject and cover the full period, and several central figures are close to the data: for example, ownership and renting are equal at 50% in 1971, and the two categories move in opposite directions for much of the period. However, the response is mainly a year-by-year list rather than a clear summary of the main features. The overview is missing, and the final claim about inflation is unsupported by the chart, which shows housing tenure rather than prices or affordability. There are also notable inaccuracies: in 2011 ownership was about 64% and renting 36%, not 37% and 32%. Focus on the overall reversal and the late-period change, and avoid explanations the visual cannot establish.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response follows the dates in chronological order, so readers can generally track the figures, and phrases such as “In 1981” and “In 1991 and 2001” provide basic signposting. However, the organisation is repetitive and lacks a distinct overview that would establish the main trend before the details. Most sentences repeat the same pattern of reporting owned and rented percentages, while the final inflation explanation interrupts the chart description and does not follow from the data. Paragraphing is also absent, making the response feel like one continuous sequence. Group the early years, the crossover around 1971, and the later years into purposeful sections, and use a concise overview to guide the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use enough basic vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “percentages,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “remained,” but the range is limited and several expressions are repetitive or imprecise. Phrases such as “people living in rented home” and “people started to live in their own houses” describe household accommodation awkwardly; the chart concerns the proportion of households, not individual people. There are also spelling errors, including “respectove,” “percenatges,” and “canot,” which reduce accuracy. Use more precise chart language such as “the proportion of households in owner-occupied accommodation” and “the share of rented households,” and vary reporting verbs without changing the meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You produce several understandable simple sentences and attempt longer structures, for example, “In 1953, number of persons living in rented home and own homes remained…” However, errors in articles, agreement, sentence boundaries, and punctuation occur often enough to make the writing less controlled. Examples include “The graphs probably shows,” “In 1953, number,” and the run-together opening “rented. This data.” Some sentences also have unclear grammatical relationships, as in “people started living in own houses and its percentages increased.” Practise accurate article use and subject–verb agreement, and separate sentences with appropriate punctuation. A wider range of sentence patterns will be more effective once these basic structures are consistently controlled.
