Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
You identify the chart’s subject and make a basic comparison between ownership and renting, including approximate figures for 1918, 1939 and 1961. However, the response reports only part of the time period and does not give a clear, accurate overview of the main trends. Most importantly, the 1953 figures are misreported: ownership was about 32%, not over 60%, while renting was about 68%. The statement that there was “no stability” is vague and does not describe the overall rise in ownership and fall in renting, followed by a slight reversal by 2011. To improve, summarise these broad trends first, then select accurate figures from across the period to support them.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response, beginning with an introduction and an overall comment before moving through selected years. Time references such as “In 1939” and “In 1961” help the reader follow the sequence. However, the progression is incomplete and the ideas are not grouped into a clear overview and supporting details. The sentence “THis is a clear comparison and the percentage in the bar chat” does not explain what is being compared, and the final statement about “no stability” is disconnected from the figures. Use separate paragraphs for the overview and key data, and connect comparisons explicitly—for example, explain how ownership and renting changed in opposite directions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “households,” “owned accommodation,” “rented accommodation” and “percentage,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “20 up,” “70 plus,” “the households accommodation” and “all the provided data suggests is no stability.” These choices make some comparisons difficult to interpret. There are also spelling and form errors, including “Futhermore,” “activires” and “bar chat.” Aim for precise chart language such as “approximately,” “accounted for,” “rose” and “fell,” and check spelling and collocations when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts a few longer sentences, including “Overall it is clear that…” and “According to the chart…,” but most structures are simple or incomplete, and grammatical errors frequently affect clarity. For example, “the households in owned accommodation in 1918 is 20 up” has an incorrect verb form and an unclear sentence pattern; “and the 1953” uses an incorrect construction; and “all the provided data suggests is no stability” is missing a clear grammatical structure. Subject–verb agreement and articles are also inconsistent, as in “the chart compares … and present.” Practise accurate sentence frames for describing figures and trends, and check verb agreement, tense, articles and punctuation.
