Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the two categories and report several relevant figures, including the rise in ownership from about 23% in 1918 to 69% in 2001 and its fall by 2011. However, the overview is inaccurate: rented accommodation was not higher throughout; the two shares were equal in 1971, and ownership was higher from 1981 onward. Several details are also misreported: 1939 and 1953 renting was about 68%, not 78%; the crossover was in 1971, not 1997; and the final rented figure was about 36%, not 38%. The response therefore only partially presents the main features. Give a clear overview of the overall opposing trends and accurately select key turning points and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction to an overview, a sequence of data points, and a concluding sentence. Time markers such as “To begin with,” “In 1961,” and “From 2001 to 2011” help the reader follow the chronology. However, progression is weakened by inaccurate or confusing sequencing, especially “In 1997” and the sentence beginning “Between 1981 and 1991,” which mixes ownership and renting figures unclearly. The overview and conclusion also repeat a broad claim rather than summarising the changing relationship between the categories. Organise the body into clearer stages—early years, crossover, and later years—and use comparisons to connect the figures rather than listing them mechanically.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

Vocabulary is sufficient to identify the chart’s subject and report basic changes, with terms such as “percentage,” “owned,” “rented,” and “accommodation.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the account awkward or unclear. For example, “rented households accommodation,” “rented people,” and “the owner of household” do not express the categories naturally; use “households in rented accommodation” and “homeowners” instead. There are also spelling errors, including “accomadation,” “onwer,” “rentel,” and “accomodation.” Avoid repeatedly using “people” for households, and choose precise chart language such as “the proportion of households” and “ownership rose/fell.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts some longer sentences and uses basic time clauses, but grammatical control is weak and errors frequently affect clarity. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “households … was 22%,” while “In 1939 to 1953 the both…” has faulty structure and unclear reference. The sentence about 1981 and 1991 also lacks a clear grammatical distinction between the ownership and rental figures. Articles, plurals, and sentence construction are often inaccurate, and the overview sentence “rented households accommodation was very high than owned” is difficult to interpret. Build accurate simple comparison sentences first, then add controlled complex forms, for example: “Ownership rose to 60% in 1981, while renting fell to 40%.”
