Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given bar chat compares the percentage of households, who were owning and renting their houses in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, it can be seen that maximum citizens were lived in rented accommodation in initial years and the ratio of rental accommodation was dramatically decreased over the period of time. However, minimum individuals were lived in their own houses and the percentage was slightly increased over the period of time.
To begin with, the highest number of individuals were lived in rental apartments, which was around 75%. While the percentage of owned houses noticed only 22% in 1918. In addition, the number of rental houses were reduced up to 68% in the year 1939 and 1953. In contrast, almost 10% incline observed in households, who purchase their houses. After 8 years, the ratio of rental accommodation was continuous decline and owned accommodation was slowly climb up.
After a decade, the ratio of both rental and owned apartment was similar, which was 50%. Nevertheless, individuals were more purchased their houses as compare to rental houses from 1991 and 2001. Lastly, around 64% of households were lived in their own accommodation and approximately 35% of citizens were lived in rental accommodation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You provide a clear overview of the main pattern: renting was more common at the start, while ownership rose and the two figures met at 50% in 1971. You also report several relevant values accurately, including the rental figures for 1939 and 1953 and the approximate 2011 split. This addresses the task and selects meaningful comparisons. However, the overview overgeneralises the later trend: ownership did not keep increasing throughout, but peaked at about 69% in 2001 before falling to 64% in 2011, while renting rose again. The claim that ownership increased by “almost 10%” between 1918 and 1939 is also unclear, since it rose by about nine percentage points. Make the late reversal explicit and distinguish percentages from percentage-point changes.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two detail paragraphs. Its progression from the early years to the later period is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “In contrast,” and “Lastly” help guide the reader. This gives the report a coherent overall arrangement. To make the progression more controlled, group the data into clear phases and connect comparisons directly rather than relying on a sequence of time markers. For example, “After 8 years” is vague, and the sentence beginning “After a decade” does not identify the year. Some linking phrases also feel mechanical or leave relationships unclear. State the relevant years and use concise links to show how the two series compare.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “accommodation,” “ratio,” “decline,” and “similar,” so the topic remains clear. However, several word choices and collocations are noticeably inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “bar chat,” “maximum citizens,” “rental apartments,” and “individuals were more purchased their houses” do not express the chart data naturally. The response also repeatedly substitutes “individuals” or “citizens” for households, although the chart measures households. Aim for accurate, consistent terms such as “the proportion of households,” “home ownership,” and “rented accommodation.” Use verbs such as “rose,” “fell,” and “reached” to describe changes directly, rather than relying on less suitable phrases like “was slowly climb up.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mixture of simple sentences and more complex forms, including contrast clauses with “However” and “In contrast,” and a relative clause in the opening. Nevertheless, errors in verb forms, agreement and sentence construction occur repeatedly and sometimes make the intended meaning harder to process. Examples include “were lived,” “the percentage … was slightly increased,” “the ratio … was continuous decline,” and “owned accommodation was slowly climb up.” The sentence “While the percentage of owned houses noticed only 22%” is also incomplete as written. Practise using active or passive forms consistently—for example, “the proportion living in rented homes fell”—and check subject–verb agreement and clause completeness. More accurate control of these patterns would make your comparisons clearer.
