Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two categories and describe their broad opposing trends: renting falls for much of the period while ownership rises, and both reverse slightly by 2011. You also include several relevant figures, such as renting at 68% in 1939 and 1953 and ownership reaching about 69% in 2001. However, the overview is unclear and contains a contradiction: “The highest number of households rented” does not describe the whole period, since ownership becomes higher after 1971. Some details are also mislabelled: the final paragraph calls the 1918 rented figure 22%, when it is ownership that is about 23%, and says rented accommodation grew to 32%. Clarify the crossover and report each series accurately to make the summary more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: an opening, an overview, and paragraphs containing details, with linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In addition,” and “Moreover.” However, the progression is difficult to follow because the two detail paragraphs repeat and mix the same trends, and the final paragraph switches between rented and owned accommodation without clear reference. For example, “Household who live in rented house in 1918 22%” makes it hard to identify which series the figure belongs to. Several connectors are used mechanically, while punctuation and sentence boundaries are inconsistent. Group the figures by series or by time period, use clear topic sentences, and ensure each pronoun or category label has an unmistakable reference.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “proportion,” “decline,” “increase,” and “rapidly,” so the reader can recognise the intended comparisons. However, the range is limited and several choices or combinations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning unclear. Phrases such as “on the end,” “return grew,” “rented house was to high,” and “in some proportion” are not natural ways to describe chart trends. There are also spelling errors, including “accomodation,” and repeated use of “house” where “households” or “accommodation” is more appropriate. Build a small set of accurate trend expressions and use them consistently, for example, “rose to,” “fell to,” “remained stable,” and “by the end of the period.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response attempts to combine ideas using time clauses and contrast, but sentence structures are often faulty, and errors frequently make relationships between figures difficult to understand. Examples include “between 1918 to 2011,” “in 1939 to 1953 it's remain same,” and “Household who live in rented house in 1918 22%,” where prepositions, verb forms, articles, and sentence structure are not controlled. Capitalisation and punctuation also create run-on sentences, particularly in the overview and the final paragraph. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, such as “The proportion of rented households fell from 77% in 1918 to 68% in 1939.” Then check tense consistency and use “between…and…” or “from…to…” accurately.
