Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the two categories and report the broad contrast: renting was highest at the beginning, while ownership rose over time and then fell slightly. However, the response only partially covers the chart. The opening gives the starting year as “11” rather than 1918, and the ownership peak is placed in 2001, although it was highest in 2001 only marginally (69%) and had already reached 68% in 1991; the equal point of 50% in 1971 is omitted. The overview also says ownership “increased a lot” without clearly summarising the overall crossover. The response is 11 words below the required minimum. Include a clearer overview and a few accurate comparisons to develop the main features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate comments on ownership and renting. This gives the reader some organisation, and “Whereas” signals a contrast between the two categories. However, progression is limited because the body paragraphs repeat broad trends rather than developing comparisons across the years. Some linking is awkward or unclear, particularly “and vice versa in 2011,” which does not explain precisely how renting changed. The repeated “it can be seen” also makes the overview mechanical. Improve cohesion by grouping related figures into a chronological comparison and using clear references such as “By contrast” or “At the same time” only where they accurately connect ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the basic topic and trends, with relevant terms such as “percentage,” “peak,” “slight downfall,” and “improvement.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, making parts of the report difficult to interpret. For example, “people living in the rented” is not a natural way to describe households in rented accommodation, and “started increasing by each passing year” is awkward. There are also frequent spelling errors, including “propert ion,” “accomodation,” “hihgest,” and “perc ntage,” which reduce clarity and control. Use precise chart language such as “the proportion of households” and “rose steadily,” and check spelling carefully before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt some longer sentences, including “The percentage of people owning their house started from the year 1918 by 22% which was gradually…” However, these structures are often faulty, and the response relies heavily on simple statements with limited grammatical variety. Errors in sentence construction and verb forms occur throughout: “the percentage … and increased a lot” lacks a clear grammatical connection, while “it has shown a bit improvement” uses an incorrect article and tense pattern. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with spaces before commas and full stops and several run-on constructions. Build clearer sentences around a subject and verb—for example, “Ownership rose from 23% in 1918 to 69% in 2001”—and use past-tense forms consistently when describing the chart.
