Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar graph illustrates the proportion of individuals who owned households and rental accommodation of England and Wales within the time-frame of 12 years starting with 1918 till 2011.
Considering it from an overall perspective it can be apparently observed that the proportion of people who rented their accommodation is very high till 1961 and after 1981 the percentage of owned houshold significantly rose constantly. However, the similar proportion observed for both houshold types.
To begin with, the proportion of rented accommodation was accounted the highest figure at around 76% before falling near 68% in 1939 and remained relatively stable till 1953. However, it again falls around 59% in 1961. Surprisingly, the figure for rented accommodation was observed at 50% which was similar to owned households in 1971. After 1971 the figures of rented houshold was witnessing significant downfall till 2001 at approximately 31% in 2001 before rising near 35% in 2011.
Furthermore, the percentage of owned accommodation was very low at approximately 22% in the beginning which than rise to 31% in 1939 and remained relatively unchanged till 1953. In 1961 the figures were at around 41% before experiencing similar proportion with rented household figures at 50% in 1971 before witnesssing constant rose till 2001 at around 68% after that it decreased near 63% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You identify the main pattern accurately: renting falls overall while ownership rises, the two are equal in 1971, and both reverse slightly by 2011. The figures you give—such as roughly 68% renting in 1939 and 31% in 2001—are consistent with the chart. You also provide an overview and support it with data across the period. However, the overview is not fully clear: “the proportion of people who rented their accommodation is very high till 1961” does not capture that renting remains the majority only through 1961, and “the similar proportion observed for both household types” needs to specify the 1971 crossover. The claim that ownership rose “constantly” is also too broad because it dipped after 2001. State these key features more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing rented and owned accommodation. The chronological sequencing makes the figures easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore,” and “After 1971” help signal progression. This is a coherent arrangement, but cohesion is not always smooth or precise. “However” is used where the relationship is not a contrast, and the overview’s “the similar proportion” has an unclear reference. Some sentences also carry several stages of change at once, particularly the final sentence, making the progression harder to track. Use fewer, more purposeful transitions and make comparisons explicit—for example, identify the year when the two proportions were equal.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “remained relatively stable,” “falling,” and “decreased,” and the intended trends are generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal reporting language, such as “accounted the highest figure” and “experiencing.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “owned households,” “figures of rented household,” and “constant rose.” Spelling and word-form slips such as “houshold” and “witnesssing” also reduce precision. Aim for standard chart-reporting collocations: describe the percentage of households that owned or rented their homes, and say that a figure “rose steadily” or “fell.” This would make the vocabulary more accurate and flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including time clauses and comparisons, and the overall meaning can usually be followed. However, errors occur in sentence structure, verb forms, agreement, and articles. For example, “it can be apparently observed” is awkwardly constructed, while “the figures of rented houshold was witnessing” has a subject–verb agreement problem and an unsuitable verb form. In “which than rise to 31%,” the relative clause needs a correctly formed past-tense verb. The overview fragment “However, the similar proportion observed” also lacks a complete verb structure. Practise building concise sentences with a clear subject and past-tense verb, and check agreement and articles before submitting. More accurate control of these patterns would strengthen the response.
