IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart displays the proportion of owned houses and rented accommodations in both England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, it can be seen that the percentages of owned acomodation had had a plateu before gradually increasing from the beginning, whereas the number of rented households decreased before increasing at the end of the given period, although it was low compared to the starting numbers.

In 1918 more than 20% houses in England and Wales were owned places, which increased above 30% by 1939 and stayed stable till 1953. After that the popularity gradually climbed till it reached its peak at close to 70% in 2001, however this steady increase fell in 2011, accounting to almost 63%.

Rented accommodations started off with a higher percantage compared to owned households in 1918, accounting to above 75%. The same plateu case happened to rented houses in both 1939 and 1953, by being almost close to 70%. Afterwards, the statistics of rental houses steadily went down and reached the lowest by being almost 30% in 2001. Moreover, rented accommodations became demandful in 2011, above 45% of houses were rented accommodations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main long-term pattern: ownership rises from about 23% to a high near 70%, while renting generally falls from about 77%. You also note the shared plateau in 1939 and 1953 and the reversal in 2011, so the response covers the key stages. However, some details are inaccurate: ownership was about 64% in 2011, not almost 63% (a small difference), but rented accommodation was about 36%, not above 45%. Calling ownership’s early pattern a plateau is also unclear, since it rises between 1918 and 1939 before remaining level. More precise reporting of the final figures and a clearer overview of the contrasting trends would make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is organised into an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for ownership and renting. This gives the reader a clear route through the information, and time markers such as “After that” and “Afterwards” help show sequence. The comparison between the two categories is also easy to follow because each is discussed in its own paragraph. To strengthen progression further, connect the two series more directly at important points—for example, note that they meet at 50% in 1971 and then move in opposite directions. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated “Afterwards” and “Moreover,” and the final sentence’s relationship to the preceding trend could be clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “accounting for,” “gradually climbed,” and “steadily went down.” These choices communicate the broad trends, but several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision. “Demandful” does not naturally describe a rising share of rented homes, and “popularity” is not the best term for the percentage of households. There are also spelling errors in “acomodation,” “plateu,” and “percantage.” Prefer standard chart language such as “the proportion of households renting” and “reached a peak.” Avoid combining near-synonyms, as in “almost close to 70%,” and use concise, precise wording throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in the overview and time clauses such as “After that.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the main comparisons can be followed. Some grammatical errors nevertheless reduce accuracy. In “the percentages … had had a plateu,” the repeated auxiliary is unnecessary and the tense is unsuitable for describing chart data; use “the percentage … plateaued.” The phrase “accounting to almost 63%” needs a different grammatical pattern, such as “at about 64%.” In “above 45% of houses were rented accommodations,” the sentence structure is awkward; “the share of rented households rose to about 36%” is clearer. Check tense consistency and clause construction when describing changes.
