Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the proportion of households in owned and rented accomodation in England and Wales from the period 1918 to 2011.
Overall, it can be seen at a glance that the chart demonstartes that percentages of the individuals who has rented households and who has owned households had fluctuated throughout the period from 1918 to 2011. In 1918, the rented accomodation had the highest percentage while owned accomodation had the lowest percentage of households. By 1971, the percentage of households in owned and rented accomodation became equal.
To begin with the year 1918, this is the year where owned accomodation had the lowest percentage of households and rented accomodation had the highest percentage of households among the others.
Moreover, the percentage of households in rented accomodation remained higher than the owned accomodation untill the year 1971. After that, the percentage of households in owned accomodation rose and remained higher than the rented accomodation untill the year 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main contrast accurately: renting was more common at the start, the two figures met in 1971, and ownership was higher thereafter through 2011. This gives the response a relevant overview and addresses the chart. However, the account is only partly developed: it gives no figures to show the scale of change, and the claim that the percentages “had fluctuated throughout” is too general to describe the clear long-term shift from renting to ownership. The final period also needs more precision: ownership peaked at about 69% in 2001 before falling to 64% in 2011, while renting rose from 31% to 36%. Include selected data and describe these turning points to make the key features clearer.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and subsequent detail, and the ideas are broadly easy to follow. The contrast between the two accommodation types is maintained across the response. However, progression is limited because the third paragraph repeats the 1918 comparison already made in the overview, while the later paragraphs largely restate that renting remained higher until 1971 and ownership afterwards. Cohesive phrases such as “To begin with” and “Moreover” signal sequence, but they do not create much development. Organise the details into meaningful stages—early years, the crossover, and the later reversal—and use comparisons or references to connect them without repeating the same point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “owned,” and “rented,” so the chart’s subject remains clear. There is some variation in how you introduce the information, but the range is narrow and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “individuals who has rented households” and “among the others.” The repeated use of “percentage of households” also makes the description less flexible. Spelling errors in “accomodation,” “demonstartes,” and “untill” are noticeable, although the intended meaning is generally recoverable. Aim for concise, accurate chart language, such as “the share of households in rented accommodation,” and use verbs like “rose,” “fell,” and “peaked” to report changes precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response includes a mix of simple statements and more complex forms, including the time clause “After that” and the relative clause “the year where…”. Most sentences communicate the intended comparisons, and errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical control is inconsistent, however. In “individuals who has rented households,” the verb does not agree with the plural subject, and the construction itself is awkward; “households that rented accommodation” would be clearer. The sentence beginning “Overall” also has a cumbersome structure, with “it can be seen” followed by “the chart demonstrates.” The repeated “the year where” construction is not well controlled. Use direct sentence patterns and check agreement, clause structure, and punctuation.
