Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response identifies the chart’s subject and includes a broad comparison between ownership and renting, with approximate figures for 1918 and 2011. However, the overview is unclear and partly inaccurate: ownership did not rise “increasingly rapidly” throughout, since it levelled off around 2001 and then fell by 2011. The account also covers only the early years and omits major features such as the crossover at 1971, the peak in ownership in 2001, and the later reversal. The statement that the 1953 figure “increase to 5 percent” is not supported by the chart. The response is 106 words, 44 short of the 150-word minimum; develop the key trends and comparisons to provide a complete summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a basic sequence from an opening statement to an overview and then references to 1918, 2011, 1939 and 1953. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “As well as” and “Moreover” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the response moves between years without a clear grouping or consistent comparison, and “As well as there are some more years in which these changes shown by research” does not clearly introduce the next point. The paragraphing also does not help distinguish the overview from supporting details. Organise the response into a concise overview followed by chronological or trend-based comparisons, using clear links between the figures.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant topic vocabulary, including “percentage,” “owned and rented accommodation,” and “passage of time,” so the general subject is recognisable. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, as in “individuals which have their own houses are very lesser,” “rented houses,” and “changes shown by research.” “Young people” is also an unsupported and unsuitable description of households in the chart. These choices make some information unclear and limit precision. Use standard chart language such as “the proportion of households,” “homeowners,” “rented accommodation,” “rose,” and “fell,” and ensure that descriptions refer to households rather than people or age groups.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts both simple and longer sentence forms, including a contrast with “but” and a time clause beginning “with the passage of time.” However, grammatical control is inconsistent. Examples include “percentage of household,” “the individuals which have,” “it increasingly rapidly,” and “the young people who are live,” where agreement, relative clauses, verb forms, and sentence construction are faulty. The final sentence, “Moreover, in 1953 this percentage is increase to 5 percent,” also has an incorrect verb form and does not express a clear comparison. These errors sometimes obscure the intended meaning. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and basic clause patterns, for example: “The proportion of households owning their homes rose, while the proportion renting fell.”
