Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the percentages of households in owner-occupied and rental accomodation in England and Wales over the period of 93 years in 1918 and 2011. It shows that between 1918 to 1961 the portion of rentals are at the peak as compared to the self-owners who gain massive increase in 1981 to 2011. Overall, the the year of 1971 remains same for both.

The home ownership was very declined in 1918 and it gain slight increase in next years. After the 1971, when both are at same points the figures of own-house accomodation increases which is at its peak in 2001 but face a svere decline in 2011.

On the other hand, the households in rental accomodations is not near to the others and is very high in its comparison all the people in England and Wales seems to live in the rented accomodities but with the passage of time similar to the self-owned the numbers were same in 1971. After this year there is a sudden reverse in these numbers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the two categories and give a broad overview of the crossover: ownership rises while renting falls, and both are equal in 1971. These are relevant main features. However, some descriptions are inaccurate or unclear. Rentals are not at their peak throughout 1918–1961; they decline from 77% to 59% over those years, although they remain higher than ownership until 1971. Likewise, ownership does not increase across the whole 1981–2011 period: it reaches about 69% in 2001 before falling to 64% in 2011. The claim that rentals are “not near to the others” is also confusing. Select the key turning points and report them precisely, including the overall rise and later slight reversal in ownership.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has an introduction, an overview, and separate discussion of ownership and renting, so there is some organisation. However, the progression is not consistently clear: the overview combines several time periods and claims, while the later paragraphs repeat the 1971 equality and the reversal in trends. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” and “After this year” help signal contrast and sequence, but some references are vague, particularly “the others” and “these numbers,” making it difficult to identify which figures are meant. Improve the paragraph flow by giving a concise overview first, then describing the shared trend and the main turning points in a clear chronological order. Avoid repeating the same comparison.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “percentages,” “households,” “owner-occupied,” and “rental accommodation,” and you attempt varied expressions such as “with the passage of time.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural, which sometimes obscures the data. For example, “the portion of rentals are at the peak” and “self-owners who gain massive increase” do not express the trends clearly; “accommodation” is also misspelled as “accomodation.” The phrase “rented accomodities” is not an appropriate term for homes. Use standard chart language consistently, such as “the proportion of households renting” and “home ownership rose,” and check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

There are attempts to use longer sentences and time clauses, for example, “After the 1971, when both are at same points…” However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Examples include “between 1918 to 1961,” “the portion … are,” and “it gain slight increase”; these show problems with prepositions, subject–verb agreement, and verb forms. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “the the year” and the long final sentence beginning “On the other hand.” Use past tense consistently for the historical data, check singular and plural agreement, and divide long sentences into shorter, complete statements.
