Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar graph illustrates the proportion of housholds living in their own and rented residence in England and Wale from 1918 to 2011.
Overall, It can be seen that households of owned accomodation has been dominent from 1918 to 1961, while rented households wee much than owned households from 1981 ownwards.
To begin with, In 1918 nearly 80% of households were rented and this was the highest number of households, Furthermore rented households were greater than owned households in 1939,1953 and even in 1961. A noticeable point is the owned households had been increasing throughout the years and ultimately reached equally to rented households in 1971.
Moreover, owned households for the first time crossed the number of rented households in 1981 by 10%, and had also been greater in 1991 and 2001 at about 70%, while the number of rented accomodation had decreased from 1971 to 2001 and was slightly increased in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the broad movement from renting towards ownership and include several relevant years, such as the equal 50% shares in 1971 and the later rise in ownership. However, the overview contains a major reversal: it says owned accommodation was dominant from 1918 to 1961, when renting was actually higher throughout that period. The later statement that rented households were “much than owned” from 1981 onwards also reverses the chart; ownership was higher from 1981 to 2001, before renting rose again in 2011. Some figures are imprecise or unclear, including “about 70%” for ownership in both 1991 and 2001. Correcting the overview and reporting the final reversal would make the key features clearer and more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and two paragraphs describing the earlier and later years. Time markers such as “To begin with” and “Moreover” help signal progression, and the reader can generally follow the sequence of dates. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement and shows some stronger organisation. However, the overview’s reversed comparison conflicts with the later details, weakening the logical progression. Some linking is mechanical, particularly “Furthermore” and “Moreover,” and the final sentence groups several trends without clearly distinguishing the 2011 change. Use a more accurate overview, then organise the data into clear periods and connect comparisons directly.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “noticeable point,” “increasing,” “crossed,” and “decreased.” These choices show an attempt to describe trends rather than simply list figures, and the meaning is usually recoverable. However, several spelling errors—“housholds,” “Wale,” “accomodation,” and “domin ent” (intended as “dominant”)—reduce accuracy. Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise: “the highest number of households” refers to a percentage, while “crossed the number” is not a natural way to compare proportions. Aim for precise collocations such as “the highest proportion” and “overtook the share of rented households,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while” and “that,” and most of the message remains understandable. However, errors in agreement and sentence construction are noticeable. For example, “households of owned accommodation has been” should use a plural verb, and “the owned households had been increasing” has an awkward tense choice for describing a chart trend. The sentence beginning “A noticeable point is the owned households…” also needs a clearer grammatical structure, such as “A noticeable point is that the proportion of owner-occupied households increased.” Capitalisation after commas is inconsistent, as in “Furthermore” and “In 1918.” More reliable agreement, tense choices and sentence boundaries would improve control.
