The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The illustration shows the percentage of households owned or rented in the area of England and Wales between 1918 to 2011.

The major changes have been noticed from 1953, where the rented households was rapidly start decreasing till 2011, where percentage drop from 70% to the least we can notice in 2001 at just a bit more of 30%, so we can make a rationale that people start owning households by time, and the trend of renting is kept falling until a little spike in 2011 at almost 40%.

On the other hands, the household in owned accomendation kept rising from 1918. As illustrated in the graph we can see that it started from 23% and in 2001 it hit the highest as almost 70 percent. but eventually a little fallout in 2011 where some 3-4% falldown.

Finally, we can conclude this as people are more intrested in owning the households rather than rented accommendation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the two main opposing trends and include several relevant figures: ownership rises from 23% to about 70% in 2001, while renting falls to just over 30% before increasing in 2011. The final comparison also captures the broad shift towards ownership. This meets the task well, and the response shows some of the precision expected at a stronger level. However, the overview is not fully accurate: the decline in renting begins before 1953, and ownership does not keep rising throughout, since it falls from 69% in 2001 to 64% in 2011. The claim that people are “more interested” in owning is an unsupported explanation of the figures. State the overall crossover around 1971 and describe the 2011 reversal precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph on renting, one on ownership, and a concluding comparison. Phrases such as “On the other hands” and “Finally” signal the intended progression, and the two series are discussed separately, which helps the reader follow the main points. Some links are nevertheless mechanical or unclear. For example, the long second paragraph moves from the starting point to the 2001 low and then the 2011 rise in one sentence, making the sequence harder to track. “On the other hands” is also an inaccurate linking phrase. To strengthen progression, give a concise overview after the introduction, then group the early and later changes clearly and use references such as “this figure” only when their meaning is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “percentage,” “rising,” “decreasing,” “highest,” and “spike,” so the main trends are generally understandable. There is also an attempt to vary wording rather than repeat only “go up” and “go down.” However, several noticeable spelling and word-choice problems limit precision: “accomendation” and “accommendation” are misspelled, “fallout” is not the right term for a decline in a figure, and “rationale” does not fit the intended inference. Phrases such as “a little spike” and “a little fallout” are informal and imprecise for an academic report. Build a more reliable set of chart verbs and collocations, and check spelling of key topic words before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a clause beginning “where” and a contrast introduced by “On the other hands.” This shows some range, but control is inconsistent, and several errors make the relationships between events less clear. For example, “the rented households was rapidly start decreasing” has problems with agreement and verb form; “between 1918 to 2011” uses an incorrect preposition pattern; and “it started from 23% and in 2001 it hit the highest” has an unclear subject and awkward clause structure. Capitalisation after the full stop in “but eventually” also needs attention. Use shorter, controlled sentences for the data, and practise accurate past-tense forms, subject–verb agreement, and sentence boundaries before adding complex clauses.
