Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response recognises that ownership and renting move in opposite directions, but it does not adequately summarise the chart. Its overview is also inaccurate: it says people in earlier years preferred ownership and recent residents prefer renting, whereas ownership rose over most of the period and was higher than renting from 1981 onward, apart from the final slight reversal in 2011. No chart figures or key stages are reported. Most of the response instead speculates about why people choose housing, mentioning retirement, crypto, and investment; these explanations are not shown by the data and take the place of the required comparisons. To improve, give a factual overview and select several important figures, such as the equal 50% shares in 1971 and the ownership peak around 69% in 2001.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation: the opening introduces the topic, and the following paragraphs contrast earlier and more recent periods using “On the other hand.” This gives the reader a basic sense of direction. However, the response does not progress through the chart’s timeline or group its data into clear comparisons, and the main discussion shifts into unsupported explanations rather than developing a summary. Linking is also limited and sometimes awkward; “however” and “on the other hand” do not create a clear sequence of chart features. Paragraphing is present, but the ideas within each paragraph are repetitive. A clearer structure would be an introduction, a concise overview, and two data-focused paragraphs comparing the earlier and later years.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses some relevant housing vocabulary, including “house owners,” “rent,” “investment,” and “expensive,” and attempts to express contrasts between ownership and renting. However, the range is limited and several choices are inaccurate or informal for an academic chart summary. “House rentals” and “rentels” are not natural terms for households in rented accommodation, while “crypto,” “headache,” and “without any tention” are unsuitable or unclear in this context. Repetition of “individuals” and “prefer” also limits precision. Use the chart’s categories consistently—“homeowners” and “renters”—and choose neutral trend language such as “the proportion of households owning their homes increased.” This would make the description more precise and appropriately formal.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts some longer sentences, including a contrast introduced by “on the other hand,” but control is inconsistent and the range of sentence structures remains limited. Errors in agreement and verb forms occur repeatedly: “The chart showcase,” “individuals … prefer,” and “individuals … doesn’t want” do not match their subjects. There are also problems with infinitive patterns and articles, as in “prefer to being” and “want live in their own house.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are frequently faulty, including the missing space after “2011.” and the run-on construction beginning “however individuals.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning harder to follow. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled clauses using “while” or “whereas.”
