Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

You identify the chart’s subject and include a broad comparison, including the equal 50% shares in 1971. However, the overview is inaccurate: ownership did not exceed renting from 1918 to 1961; renting was higher throughout that period, and from 1981 to 2011 ownership was higher, not renting. Several figures are also misread: ownership began at about 23%, not 17–18%, and rose rather than fell between 1939 and 1961. The response ends before describing the later years, so the main upward ownership trend, its peak around 2001, and the slight reversal by 2011 are missing. It is also 19 words below the required minimum. Select the key trends accurately and support them with a few correct figures in a complete summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, an overview and detail paragraphs, and sequencing phrases such as “To commence with” and “Furthermore” show an effort to guide the reader. The 1971 comparison is also placed logically after the earlier years. However, progression is difficult to follow because the overview reverses the chart’s main comparisons and the account of the data is incomplete. Some links are awkward or unclear, such as “Whereas” beginning a sentence without a clear contrast, and “all these years” does not specify which years. The final paragraph begins but stops at “the ration of,” leaving the response unfinished. Use clear chronological grouping and complete each paragraph’s point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “accommodation,” “ratio,” and “remained constant,” so the reader can recognise the topic and intended comparisons. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. For example, “percentage of having own house” and “ratio of own house” are not natural ways to describe the chart, while “maximum percentage” is unsuitable for the starting figure. There are also spelling errors such as “baar,” “deceased,” and “Wheras,” and inconsistent capitalisation of “England” and “Wales.” Prefer precise chart language such as “the proportion of households that owned their homes” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a time clause in “In 1939 … but remained constant in 1953” and a relative clause in “in which the percentage…”. These attempts show some range, but control is inconsistent and errors frequently make sentences awkward or unclear. For instance, “The give baar graph illustrates” has an incorrect sentence structure, and “the percentage was decreased more 10% than 1953” has faulty verb construction and comparison. The overview also contains incomplete or poorly connected clauses, including “Whereas, from 1981 to 2011…”. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and comparison patterns, such as “ownership rose from X to Y” and “the figure was 10 percentage points higher,” and punctuate contrast clauses correctly.
