IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart compares the proportion of ownership and rental homes across England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

Overall, it is evident that households residing in rented accommodation declined, while owned living-space inclined over the period. In addition both showed similar figure in 1971.

Focusing on the rental homes, a vast majority of 77% people lived on rent in 1918 and the proportion declined to 68% in 1939 and similar figure was also seen in 1953. The trend fell sharply to just over 32% by 1991, followed by a slight decline of only 1% in 2001. At the end of the period, in 2011, the portion gained a 5% increase.

Turning towards the owned households, around 23% inhabitants bought houses in 1918 and the buying trend surged to just below 70% in 2001. Moreover, 1n 1971 figure of both stood at 50%. However, in 2011 the ownership rate decreased slightly to 63%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response identifies the main contrast accurately: renting falls over the period while ownership rises, and the two are equal at 50% in 1971. It also selects relevant figures, including the 1918 starting points and the 2001 ownership peak. This gives the report a clear overview and addresses the chart. Some details are less fully reported, however: the ownership rise through 1939, 1953, 1961 and 1981 is compressed into a general statement, and the 2011 rental figure is described as a 5% increase without stating its final level. “Just over 32%” in 1991 is also slightly imprecise for approximately 32%. Include a few more key stages and state end values explicitly to make the account more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The four-paragraph structure is appropriate: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for rental and owned accommodation. The sequence from the earliest to latest years is generally easy to follow, and transitions such as “Focusing on” and “Turning towards” help signal the shift between categories. Some linking is mechanical, though, and the overview’s “In addition” does not connect the equality point as smoothly as it could. The final paragraph also moves from the starting figure to the peak and then back to 1971 before ending in 2011, interrupting the chronological progression. Keep each series in date order and use clearer references, such as “the two proportions were equal,” to make the relationships more cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses a reasonable range of chart-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “declined,” “surged,” and “decreased slightly,” and the meaning is generally clear. It also attempts more varied phrasing, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing household data: “people lived on rent,” “owned living-space inclined,” and “the portion gained a 5% increase.” “Buying trend” also suggests a trend in purchases rather than the share of households in owned accommodation. Prefer precise, conventional terms such as “the proportion of households renting” and “the ownership rate rose.” The typo “1n” should be corrected to “In.” More consistent use of accurate collocations would improve precision and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The report includes both simple statements and more developed sentences, for example, “The trend fell sharply … followed by a slight decline,” and most relationships remain understandable. However, some sentence patterns are not fully controlled. In “In addition both showed similar figure in 1971,” the singular noun needs an article or plural form, and the comparison would be clearer with a complete construction. “The proportion declined to 68% in 1939 and similar figure was also seen in 1953” also lacks an article before “similar figure.” The sentence about the 2011 rental change is awkwardly formed, while “1n 1971” contains a character error. Check articles and sentence construction, and vary complex forms while ensuring each clause is complete and accurate.
