Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Overall, it is clear that the proportion of households living in a rented accommodation decreased significantly over the period while owning households increased over the period. In 1971 owned households and rented accommodation remained same.

In addition, in 1918 the percentage of households in owned accommodation is decreased only 21% and the rented accommodation raised high in 1918 is only 77% . Furthermore, rented accommodation remained same in 1939 and 1953 while owned household remained same in these year.

Moreover, owned accommodation approximately same in 1991 and 2001 is 69% and rented accommodation reached a peak in 1991 is only 31%. The rented accommodation raised high in 1918 and reached a low point in 2011 . The owned households and rented households is remained same in 1971 and both categories were equal at 50%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the chart’s subject and report several relevant features, including the overall rise in ownership, the fall in renting, and the equal 50% figures in 1971. You also note that the 1939 and 1953 figures were unchanged. However, coverage is partial: the opening figures are inaccurate (ownership was about 23%, not 21%), and the claim that renting reached a low in 2011 is incorrect; its lowest point was about 31% in 2001. The overview also misses the key reversal in 2011, when ownership fell and renting rose. The response is 138 words, below the 150-word minimum, which further limits the development of the summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and paragraph breaks help separate these functions. Some linking words, such as “Overall,” “Furthermore,” and “Moreover,” show an attempt to guide the reader. However, the details do not progress in a clear chronological or comparative order: the account moves from 1918 to 1939–1953, then 1991–2001, and back to 1971. Repetition also weakens progression, particularly the repeated statement that renting was high in 1918. Some connections are unclear, as in “reached a peak in 1991 is only 31%.” Organise the body chronologically and use comparisons to connect the figures rather than repeating them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “proportion,” “decreased,” “increased,” and “equal,” so the main topic is generally understandable. There is some variation in how you describe trends, but the range is limited and several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural. For example, “rented accommodation raised high” and “reached a peak” do not describe the downward trend, while “owned households” is less precise than “households in owner-occupied accommodation.” Repeated use of “remained same” also restricts the vocabulary. Aim for accurate trend language and natural collocations, such as “fell steadily,” “stood at,” and “was unchanged.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You produce some understandable simple sentences and attempt longer structures with “while” and “and,” but the range is limited and errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences awkward. For example, “the percentage … is decreased” uses an incorrect verb form, and “the percentage … 21%” is missing a verb. In “owned households and rented households is remained same,” the subject–verb agreement and verb construction are faulty. Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “a rented accommodation” and “these year.” Use straightforward past-tense reporting structures, check singular and plural agreement, and ensure each sentence has a complete, correctly formed verb phrase.
