Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the chart’s subject and report its central pattern: ownership generally rises while renting falls, with the two reaching 50% in 1971. Several key figures are accurate, including 23% ownership in 1918, 69% in 2001, and renting at 77% and 31% at the endpoints of its decline. This gives the response a relevant overview and meaningful comparisons. However, the overview’s opening claim that owned accommodation was the largest share is unclear and conflicts with the chart’s early years, when renting was higher. The account also skips some stages and says ownership rose “day by day,” which overstates a trend that includes plateaus and a final decline. Clarify the overview and describe the main phases more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, separate paragraphs for ownership and renting, and a final comparison. This helps the reader locate the main information. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow, particularly in “the proportion had to grow in in 1918 to 2001,” and the final sentence repeats the 1971 comparison after the main account. Linking words such as “Whereas,” “In contrast,” and “Conversely” are used, but some connections are unclear or do not express the intended relationship. Pronouns such as “their” also make the reference uncertain. Group the figures into clear phases and use straightforward links to show increases, decreases, plateaus, and the crossover.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “proportion,” “declined,” “peak,” and “in contrast,” so the topic is generally identifiable. However, the range is limited by repeated use of “percentage” and “accommodation,” while several phrases are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “owned rented,” “their ratio was grew,” and “the last percentage.” These choices sometimes make the intended meaning difficult to interpret. There are also spelling errors, including “thier,” “accommmodations,” and “rentend.” Aim for precise, natural collocations such as “the share of households that owned their homes” and “the proportion living in rented accommodation,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts a mixture of simple statements and longer comparisons, and some basic sentences communicate the data clearly, for example, “In 2001, their was lowest percentage at 31%.” However, many sentence patterns are not controlled, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence construction can make relationships hard to understand. Examples include “the proportion of household in owned rented was largest percentage,” “their ratio was grew,” and “owned accommodation was rose.” The sentence about growth “in in 1918 to 2001” is also difficult to parse. Practise accurate past-tense reporting (“rose,” “fell,” “remained”) and build comparisons with complete clauses, checking subject–verb agreement and article use.
