Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart compares the proportion of prople living in owned and rented house in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.
Overall, the people living in the housholds that are owned by them showed gradually increasing trend over the years eventually decreasing slighty in the last year. In contrast, the percentage of hoseholds in rented accomodation was high at the first but demonstrates a decreasing trend in the following years with a slight increase in the last year.
In 1918, only just above 20% of people had their own house but over the years this proportion changed significantly raising up to just under 70% in 2001. In 20011, this percentage fall to around 65%. In complete opposite, rented accomodations were extremely high at the start reaching just under 80% in 1918.
In next few years like 1939 and 1953 that proportion fall to a constant level just under 70%. Over the next few years, rented houses showed a decreasing trend till 2001. A slight increase have been seen in the 2011 in rented accomodations. 1971 was the last year when owned and rented houses have the same proportion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the chart’s subject and give a clear overview of the main opposing trends: ownership rises for most of the period, while renting falls, with both reversing slightly by 2011. The key crossover is also noted: “1971 was the last year” when the proportions were equal. Several figures are broadly accurate, including ownership at just over 20% in 1918 and close to 70% in 2001. This meets the task well, though some details are less fully reported: for example, the equal 50% shares in 1971 and the 2011 figures could be stated more precisely, and the account of the middle years is somewhat general. To strengthen the response further, compare the two series directly at key stages and report the main values consistently.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the data. The contrast between ownership and renting is easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “In contrast” and “In complete opposite” signal the relationship between the trends. However, the final paragraph moves between years and series, so the sequence is not always smooth; the reader must connect the rented figures in 1939 and 1953 with the ownership trend described earlier. Some linking is also mechanical or unclear, as in “In next few years like 1939 and 1953.” Grouping the early, middle, and later years more systematically, and using clearer references to each series, would make the progression more cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “percentage,” “decreasing trend,” and “slight increase,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is some variation in how you describe change, but several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “people living in the households that are owned by them” and “rented houses showed a decreasing trend.” The response also contains noticeable spelling errors, including “prople,” “housholds,” “slighty,” and “accomodation.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce the accuracy and control expected in a formal report. Prefer concise terms such as “homeowners” and “rented accommodation,” and check spelling carefully. More precise verbs for the chart’s movements would also improve the report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrastive overview sentences and the clause “when owned and rented houses have the same proportion.” The main trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “showed gradually increasing trend” needs an article and a more natural grammatical construction, while “this proportion changed significantly raising up” has an awkward clause structure. Verb forms are also inconsistent: “that proportion fall” and “A slight increase have been seen” should use past-tense forms to describe the completed chart period. The sentence “In next few years” also lacks an article. Review articles, past-tense consistency, and sentence construction; these corrections would make your varied structures more accurate.
