Student answer (Band 6.0)

The bar chart illustrates the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011.

Overall, the number of households in owned accomodation increased over the period, while the percentage of households in rented accommodation declined. In addition, the percentage of households in owned and rented accomodation maintained the same level in 1971.

In 1918, around 78% of people lived in rented accomodation whereas 22% people had their own accomodation. The figure for own accomodation reached about 32% in 1939 and remain stable till 1953. By 1971, the proportion for both own and rented accomodation became same, at 50%.

In contrast, the percentage of people living in own accomodation went up continuosly reaching nearly 68% in 1991, which was more than double the figure for rented accomodation, at 32%. Meanwhile, in 2001, the proportion for owned accomodation increased slighly to 69% and than experienced a decline to around 64% in 2011.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main opposing trends and the key crossover: ownership rises while renting falls, and both reach 50% in 1971. The figures you report are broadly consistent with the chart, including the 1991 comparison and the ownership peak in 2001 followed by a fall in 2011. However, the overview says the figures “maintained the same level in 1971,” which is less precise than explaining that the two categories were equal at that point. The response also omits the later movement in renting, which rises from 31% in 2001 to 36% in 2011. The required minimum of 150 words is not met: the response has 132 words, excluding 25 words copied from the prompt. Develop the final-period comparison to cover the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the earlier and later years. Time markers such as “In 1918,” “By 1971,” and “in 2001” help the reader follow the sequence, while “In contrast” signals a comparison. The progression is generally logical, but the final paragraph focuses on ownership and gives little account of the corresponding rental figures, so the comparison becomes uneven. Some linking is also mechanical, with repeated “In” and “Meanwhile.” To strengthen cohesion, group the two series together at each important stage and use clearer references, for example, “the rental share” when describing its movement after 2001.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant chart vocabulary, including “percentage,” “proportion,” “declined,” “reached,” and “experienced a decline,” and the meaning is generally clear. However, several phrases are imprecise or repetitive: “people had their own accommodation” shifts from households to people, and “the proportion for own accommodation” is not a natural collocation. There are also spelling errors in “accomodation,” “continuosly,” and “slighly,” which reduce accuracy. Use consistent terms such as “households,” “home ownership,” and “rented accommodation,” and check spelling carefully. A broader set of precise verbs for describing changes would also help you report the trends more flexibly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause beginning “while” and a comparison with “whereas.” Most sentences communicate the intended trends, but some grammatical errors remain. In “The figure for own accomodation reached about 32% in 1939 and remain stable,” the verb should be “remained”; “till” also needs a clearer construction, such as “until 1953.” The phrase “22% people” needs “of” (“22% of people”), and “became same” requires an article (“became the same”). In the final sentence, “and than experienced” should be “and then experienced.” Review verb tense consistency, articles, and percentage constructions to improve accuracy while retaining your sentence variety.
