Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the proportion of owned and rented household accommodations in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011.

In 1918, the rented household has the highest accommodations whereas the owned household has the least accommodations. On the other hand, in 2001, the chain is reversed as the owned household has the highest accommodation and the rented household has the least accommodation. On 1971, both the accomodations meets the similar proportion.

The rented household accommodations took a gradual increase during the given period. The difference in the proportion of decline in the accommodation was around 40%. There were a similar proportion of accommodations on 1939 and 1953 which was under 70%. In the year 1981, the accommodations reached exactly 40%. The least accommodation was slightly above 30%. In the year 2011, the accomodations became higher than in the year 2001 which was just below 40%.

On the other hand, the owned household accommodations had a gradual increase over a period of time. The least accomodation was slightly above 20%. Eventhough it had a gradual increas, there is slight decline in the accommodations which was abve 60%. the years 1939 and 1953 had somewhat similarity in the proportion. In 1981, the accommodations were exactly 60%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main contrast between ownership and renting and note the crossover in 1971, as well as the shared figures in 1939 and 1953. However, the account is only partly accurate and does not give a clear, complete overview of the trends. Most importantly, renting generally declined, rather than showing the “gradual increase” stated in the second paragraph; it rose only from 2001 to 2011. Ownership generally increased, but also fell from 2001 to 2011. Some comparisons are vague, such as “the difference in the proportion of decline … was around 40%,” and the 2011 figures are not clearly reported. Focus on the overall opposing trends and their late-period reversals, then support them with accurate key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an opening, comparisons of the two categories, and separate paragraphs for renting and ownership. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” help signal contrast, and the years provide some chronological organisation. However, progression is not consistently clear because the opening paragraph repeats details that are revisited later, while the renting paragraph describes a decline and then calls it an increase. References such as “the accommodations” are also unclear about whether they mean owned or rented households. Organise the report around an overview followed by the two trends, and use precise references such as “the proportion of rented households” to make connections easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant chart vocabulary, including “proportion,” “gradual increase,” “decline,” and “similarity,” so the reader can recognise the intended comparisons. However, the range is limited and several repeated or inaccurate expressions make the report less precise. “Accommodations” is repeatedly used where the chart measures households or the percentage of households, and “the chain is reversed” is not a natural way to describe the change in which category is larger. Spelling errors such as “accomodations,” “increas,” and “abve” are noticeable. Build a more accurate set of terms for describing proportions and trends, and check spelling and collocations before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes simple statements and some attempts at more complex structures, for example, “Even though it had a gradual increas, there is slight decline…”. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to interpret. Examples include “the rented household has the highest accommodations,” “On 1971,” and “both the accomodations meets the similar proportion,” which show problems with articles, prepositions, agreement, and sentence construction. Tense use also shifts between past and present when describing historical data. Practise forming clear past-tense comparisons, such as “In 1971, the proportions were equal,” and check subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries.
