Student answer (Band 8.5)

In modern society, people are surrounded by an unprecedented number of choices, ranging from the products they buy to the careers they pursue. While some argue that this abundance of options is beneficial, others believe it has become excessive. I largely agree with the view that people nowadays have too many choices because it often leads to confusion, stress, and difficulty in making decisions.

One reason why excessive choice can be problematic is that it creates decision fatigue. For example, when shopping online, consumers may find hundreds of similar products with only minor differences in price or features. Instead of making the process easier, this overwhelming variety can leave people uncertain about which option offers the best value. As a result, they may spend considerable time comparing products or even regret their final decision.

Another area where too many choices can have negative consequences is education and career planning. In the past, people generally had fewer career paths to consider, whereas today students can choose from countless university programs and professions. Although this provides greater freedom, it also places significant pressure on young people to make the "right" decision. Many individuals change their majors or careers several times because they are unsure which path best suits them.

However, having many choices is not entirely disadvantageous. A wider range of options enables people to select products and services that better match their personal preferences and lifestyles. For instance, advances in technology have made it possible for consumers to choose from various smartphones, health insurance plans, and online learning platforms. This competition also encourages companies to improve quality and reduce prices, ultimately benefiting customers.

In conclusion, although a broad selection of choices offers greater freedom and promotes innovation, I believe modern society has reached a point where the sheer number of options often causes unnecessary stress and indecision. Therefore, I agree to a great extent that people today have too many choices.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it consistently throughout the essay. Each paragraph is well-developed with relevant examples, such as the mention of online shopping and career planning. The counter-argument is acknowledged and balanced appropriately, which demonstrates a sophisticated approach to the task. The ideas are extended logically, and the conclusion effectively synthesises your main points while reinforcing your stance. You have successfully met the requirements of the task by providing a clear, well-supported argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'For example', 'As a result', 'Another area', and 'However', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the topic. The flow of information is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words. The structure is coherent and supports the overall argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for an academic essay. Phrases such as 'unprecedented number of choices', 'decision fatigue', and 'negative consequences' show a strong command of language. You use less common items effectively, and your word choice is generally precise. There are no significant errors in collocation or spelling that impede communication. While the vocabulary is solid and fits the context well, incorporating a few more sophisticated, topic-specific collocations could elevate the response further, but the current range is sufficient for a high band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'While some argue...', 'Although this provides...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. There are no major grammatical errors that cause confusion. The grammar is consistently accurate, and the range of structures used is sufficient to express complex ideas clearly. You have demonstrated a high level of grammatical control throughout the response, making it easy to read and understand.
