Student answer (Band 8.0)

In fast pace era, people have access to a greater variety of products, services, and several opportunities. While having numerous choices can sometimes create confusion and stress, I partly agree that sometime excessive option can lead to harm, but when managed wisely, it also improves the quality of life.

On the one hand, having too many choices can make decision-making difficult. Consumers are often confused by countless options when shopping online, selecting a career, or choosing a university. This phenomenon, commonly known as decision fatigue, can lead to anxiety and dissatisfaction. For example, streaming platforms such as Netflix and online marketplaces like Amazon offer thousands of options, making it difficult for users to choose a single movie or product. As a result, people may waste valuable time comparing alternatives instead of making quick decisions.

On the other hand, a wider range of choices gives individuals greater freedom and allows them to find products and services that best suit their needs. Technological advancement has increased access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. For instance, artificial intelligence (AI) has enabled personalised learning through platforms like ChatGPT, while e-commerce websites help consumers compare prices and purchase affordable products. Moreover, the growing popularity of remote work after the COVID-19 pandemic has provided employees with greater flexibility in choosing where and how they work.

In conclusion, I partly agree that modern society offers an overwhelming number of choices, which can occasionally cause stress and indecision. But, the benefits of greater freedom, innovation, and convenience outweigh the disadvantages, provided people make informed and balanced decisions.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position that acknowledges both sides of the argument while ultimately favouring the benefits of choice. The ideas are relevant and well-supported with examples like Netflix, Amazon, and AI platforms. The development is logical, and the conclusion effectively synthesises the main points. To reach a higher band, the student could further elaborate on the 'managed wisely' aspect mentioned in the introduction, perhaps by providing a specific strategy for how individuals can navigate excessive choice to avoid the mentioned stress.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'As a result' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the topic. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'decision fatigue', 'technological advancement', and 'personalised learning' accurately. While the range is good, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to demonstrate greater precision. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the tone remains formal and academic throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, and the control of grammar is generally strong. However, there are minor slips, such as 'In fast pace era' (should be 'In a fast-paced era') and 'sometime excessive option' (should be 'sometimes excessive options'). Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is used correctly to support the flow of ideas.
