Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is often argued that people have too many choices in modern life. I disagree with this statement because having a wide range of options helps people make better decisions and improves their quality of life. This essay will explain why I believe that having more choices is beneficial.

Firstly, having many choices allows people to select products and services that best suit their needs and budget. In the past, people had only a few options for shopping, education, or transportation. However, today they can compare prices, quality, and features before making a decision. As a result, they are more likely to be satisfied with what they choose. For example, when buying a mobile phone, customers can compare different brands and choose the one that offers the best value for their money.

Secondly, more choices create opportunities for personal growth and career success. Nowadays, students can choose from different universities, online courses, and career paths according to their interests. This helps them develop their skills and achieve their goals. For instance, a student who wants to improve English can select online classes, language institutes, or self-study applications, depending on his learning style and financial situation.

In my opinion, having many choices is a positive development because it gives people more freedom and control over their lives. Although making decisions can sometimes be difficult, the advantages of having different options are much greater than the disadvantages.

In conclusion, I disagree that people have too many choices nowadays. I believe that a greater variety of options helps individuals make better decisions, improve their lifestyle, and create a brighter future

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position of disagreement with the idea that there are 'too many' choices. The arguments are relevant and supported by examples, such as comparing mobile phone brands and educational paths. The ideas are developed sufficiently to meet the task requirements. To reach a higher band, the essay could explore the potential counter-argument—that excessive choice can lead to 'analysis paralysis' or decision fatigue—more deeply before refuting it, which would provide a more nuanced and sophisticated discussion of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'As a result' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. To improve, the writer could vary the cohesive devices further, as some transitions are quite standard, and ensure that referencing within sentences remains precise throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is adequate and appropriate for the task. The student uses topic-specific terms like 'products and services', 'career paths', and 'financial situation' correctly. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the more sophisticated, less common lexical items that would characterize a higher band. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider and more flexible range of vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate, which ensures that the message is conveyed clearly. There are no major grammatical errors that cause confusion. To move into the higher bands, the student should attempt to use a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or more advanced passive constructions, and ensure that punctuation is consistently used to enhance the flow of more complex, multi-clause sentences.
