Student answer (Band 8.0)
In today's modern world, people have more choices than ever before in many areas of life, such as education, careers, shopping, and entertainment. Some people believe that having too many options can create confusion and make decision-making difficult. I partly agree with this statement because, although having many choices can sometimes be overwhelming, it also provides more freedom and opportunities.
On the one hand, too many choices can make people feel stressed and confused. For example, when buying a mobile phone or choosing a course, there are hundreds of options with different features and prices. As a result, people often spend a lot of time comparing products and may still feel unsure about their final decision. This can lead to frustration and even regret after making a choice.
On the other hand, having more choices allows people to select what best suits their needs and interests. In the past, people had limited options for education or employment, but today they can study online, work remotely, or choose from different career paths. Similarly, consumers can compare products from different brands and buy the one that offers the best quality and price. This freedom improves people's quality of life and helps them achieve their personal goals.
In my opinion, although too many choices can sometimes make decisions more difficult, the advantages are much greater. People can reduce confusion by doing proper research and considering their priorities before making important decisions.
In conclusion, I partly agree that modern society offers too many choices, which can occasionally create confusion. However, I believe that the wide range of options available today gives people greater freedom, better opportunities, and a chance to make decisions that are most suitable for their lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with the first body paragraph explaining the negative aspects of excessive choice, such as decision fatigue and regret, and the second paragraph highlighting the benefits, such as increased freedom and personal goal attainment. The conclusion effectively synthesizes your argument. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, real-world examples beyond general categories like 'mobile phones' or 'courses' to further strengthen the depth of your analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the transition between the two sides of the argument is smooth, using cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is appropriate. The flow of ideas is natural, and the relationship between sentences is easy to follow. The use of linking words is effective without being mechanical, contributing to a coherent and well-structured response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'decision-making', 'personal goals', and 'quality of life' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and clear, it is mostly functional. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to express your ideas with more nuance. For example, instead of 'make decisions difficult', you could use 'induce decision paralysis' or 'complicate the selection process'. The spelling is accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'although having many choices can sometimes be overwhelming, it also provides...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is strong. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. To move into the higher band, ensure you continue to experiment with a wider range of complex sentence forms, such as inversion or more varied participle clauses, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you have already achieved.
