Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some individuals argue that choices have increased these days. I completely agree with this view. This abundance is driven by global trade markets that bring similar goods from all over the world and competition of multiple factories for each product. Furthermore, advanced digital technology allows online shopping stores to show millions of products at once.

The global trade has resulted in a vast variety of products in stores that are used for the same purpose. Factories of multiple brands from all around the world compete each other in production of alike products which is the reason of increased number of choices. If you go to market to buy a dining set, you will find a diversity of them in a single shop. There will be designs of dining set both, made locally, and imported from other countries which allows you to choose best for you.

The advancements in digital technology has also made a great contribution. If you search for a product on internet, you will find multiple online stores of different brands presenting variety of designs and quality. Social media and ads suggest new things constantly. For instance, when you search for a torso on google, a large number of online stores will pop up showing different sizes, colors, and shapes. Ralph Lauren and U.S Polo both make polo shirts and provide the chance to choose among them.

In conclusion, the thought of individuals that choices for a single object has increased much nowadays is completely true and is a result of rise in global trading, competition of companies, and advancement in digital technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have clearly stated your position and maintained it throughout the essay. The response addresses the prompt by discussing global trade and digital technology as drivers of increased choice. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention that online shopping allows for more choices, you could have explored the psychological impact of this 'paradox of choice' or the potential downsides, such as decision fatigue, to provide a more balanced and nuanced argument. The examples provided, such as dining sets and polo shirts, are relevant but could be expanded to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the topic. Overall, the task is addressed well, but the depth of analysis is consistent with a Band 6.5 or 7.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Furthermore' and 'For instance', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For example, the transition between the global trade paragraph and the digital technology paragraph could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that pronouns clearly refer back to their antecedents would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'abundance', 'global trade markets', and 'advancements'. However, there are some issues with collocation and word choice. For example, 'compete each other' should be 'compete with each other', and 'search for a torso' is likely a misuse of vocabulary (perhaps you meant 't-shirt' or 'top'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning more sophisticated collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text that occasionally distract the reader. For instance, 'The global trade has resulted' (should be 'Global trade has resulted'), 'reason of increased number' (should be 'reason for the increased number'), and 'advancements in digital technology has' (should be 'have'). These errors are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Focusing on these foundational areas will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
