Student answer (Band 7.5)

Some individuals argue that choices have increased these days. I completely agree with this view. This abundance is driven by global trade markets that bring similar goods from all over the world and competition of multiple factories for each product. Furthermore, advanced digital technology allows online shopping stores to show millions of products at once.

Global trade has resulted in a vast variety of products in stores that are used for the same purpose. Factories of multiple brands from all around the world compete with each other in the production of similar products which is the reason for the increased number of choices. If you go to a market to buy a dining set, you will find a diversity of them in a single shop. There will be designs of dining sets both, made locally, and imported from other countries which allows you to choose the best one for you.

The advancements in digital technology have also made a great contribution. If you search for a product on the internet, you will find multiple online stores of different brands presenting a variety of designs and quality. Social media and ads suggest new things constantly. For instance, when you search for a shirt on Google, a large number of online stores will pop up showing different sizes, colors, and shapes. Ralph Lauren and U.S Polo both make polo shirts and provide the chance to choose among them.

In conclusion, the thought of individuals that choices for a single object has increased significantly nowadays is completely true and is a result of the rise in global trading, competition of companies, and advancement in digital technology.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas regarding global trade and digital technology are relevant and logically extended. However, the essay focuses primarily on the 'causes' of increased choice rather than exploring the implications or the 'extent' of the agreement in a more nuanced way. While the arguments are well-supported with examples like dining sets and online shopping, the development could be more sophisticated to reach the higher bands. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, ensuring the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the impact of global trade and digital technology is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion' are used appropriately to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct arguments. While the flow is generally good, some of the linking could be more varied to avoid a slightly mechanical feel in the transition between sentences.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with reasonable precision. The student uses topic-specific terms such as 'global trade markets', 'digital technology', and 'imported'. While there are no major errors, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common collocations. To achieve a higher band, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated or less common lexical items to demonstrate a greater degree of flexibility and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and error-free, which ensures that communication is never impeded. There are minor issues, such as the awkward phrasing 'There will be designs of dining sets both, made locally, and imported' and the slightly repetitive sentence structure. However, the control of grammar and punctuation is generally good. Increasing the use of more varied complex structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice constructions, would improve the score.
