Student answer (Band 8.0)

In today’s modern world, rapid changes have resulted in individuals being surrounded by a wide range of options. A group of people claim that the number of choices available has increased significantly, and to a large extent I agree with this viewpoint. The reasons behind this and relevant examples will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

One major reason is the expansion of supermarkets and shopping malls. In recent years, people prefer to purchase everything under one roof, and for a single product they are offered numerous brands. This has greatly expanded consumer choice. For instance, when buying toothpaste, customers can select from a wide variety of brands, flavors, and properties, which illustrates the abundance of options available.

Another contributing factor is increasing urbanization and the growth of manufacturing industries. As the population rises, demand also grows, leading to the establishment of new companies and the launch of diverse products in the market. Moreover, in the field of education, students now benefit from the ability to choose subjects according to their interests, which was not as common in the past.

On the other hand, some argue that choices are still limited in certain areas, particularly employment. In many companies, the number of departments is restricted, and individuals feel that more divisions should be created to allow employees to select roles that align with their interests. This perspective highlights that while choices have expanded in some sectors, they remain insufficient in others.

In conclusion, although some people believe that choices are still limited, I am convinced that in most sectors—including consumer goods, education, and employment—individuals today enjoy far more options than ever before. The modern era has undeniably broadened the scope of choice available to people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the supermarket analogy and the mention of educational choices. While the argument is well-structured, the development of the 'employment' section is slightly less detailed than the consumer goods section. However, the overall response is balanced and directly answers the question regarding the extent of agreement. The conclusion effectively synthesizes the main points, confirming the writer's stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. The use of cohesive devices such as 'One major reason', 'Another contributing factor', and 'On the other hand' is effective and natural. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow of information is easy to follow, and the relationship between ideas is consistently clear, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'urbanization', 'manufacturing industries', and 'align with their interests'. While the vocabulary is accurate and conveys meaning clearly, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would characterize a higher band score. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is natural and fits the academic context well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. Examples of complex structures include 'Although some people believe that..., I am convinced that...' and '...which was not as common in the past.' Punctuation is used correctly throughout. While the range of structures is solid, the essay could benefit from a slightly wider variety of advanced grammatical forms to reach the highest band. Overall, the writing is clear, fluent, and error-free for the majority of the text.
