IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.
To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some people think that we have a lot of options in every aspect of life these days. There are a couple of reasons through which I will try to explain why I strongly agree to the statement.
Firstly, the world today has become a digital hub. We can search about anything online and everything is present on our finger tips. In this way, we can come across a bundle of options regarding anything just by using our mobile phones or tablets. Even for the simplest issues. For instance, you're in a new city and you want to try a nice restaurant. You may just google it and a list of multiple 5 star restaurants will appear on your screen from where you can easily choose one with the best reviews.
Another reason for people having a variety of options is the competetion and over-saturation in the market. In every industry, there is a lot of saturation weather it is travel industry, food or even clothing industry. You just think of buying a new shirt and a list of clothing brands will appear in your mind already. Same goes with any other example. For instance, you want to travel for your holiday and you will come across a list of airlines from which you can choose which one is best suitable for you.
Although, there are still some areas in the world where people may have lack of resources and limited options. However, in most cases I believe that people have plenty of options in every aspect of their life today.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas are relevant, focusing on the digital revolution and market saturation as drivers of choice. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, while you mention the travel and food industries, the explanation remains at a general level. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the implications of these choices—such as the psychological impact of 'choice overload' or the potential for decision fatigue—rather than just listing examples of where choices exist. The conclusion is brief but effectively summarizes your stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Another reason', and 'For instance' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the use of 'Although' at the start of the final paragraph is grammatically incorrect as it is used as a conjunction without a main clause following it. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used with grammatical precision would enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'digital hub', 'over-saturation', and 'industry'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'competetion' (competition) and 'weather' (whether), which detract from the professional tone. The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited; you rely on simple phrasing like 'a lot of' and 'a list of'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive sentence structures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical inaccuracies. For example, 'I strongly agree to the statement' should be 'I strongly agree with the statement'. There are also punctuation issues, such as the sentence fragment 'Even for the simplest issues.' and the misuse of 'Although' mentioned previously. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly.
