Student answer (Band 6.0)
MANY PEOPLE THINK THAT TODAY'S PEOPLE HAVE TOO MANY OPTIONS. MEANWHILE, I WOULD AGREE WITH THE ABOVE STATEMENT TO A MAJOR EXTENT, AND THE REASONS TO SUPPORT IT WILL BE EXPLAINED IN THE ENSUING PARAGRAPHS, ALONG WITH EXAMPLES.
DISCUSSING THE REASONS TO SUPPORT THE AGREEMENT, THE MOST EVIDENT ONE IS THAT PEOPLE FACE HUNDREDS OF OPTIONS WHEN BUYING PRODUCTS, CHOOSING CAREERS, OR SELECTING ENTERTAINMENT. TO JUSTIFY IT FURTHER, A LARGE NUMBER OF OPTIONS MAKE DECISION-MAKING STRESSFUL AND TIME-CONSUMING. FOR INSTANCE, PEOPLE SPEND ALMOST 30 MINUTES CHOOSING WHAT TO WATCH ON YOUTUBE AND NETFLIX.
FURTHERMORE, ANOTHER REASON SUPPORTING MY BELIEF IS THAT A LARGE NUMBER OF SIMILAR PRODUCTS MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO SELECT THE BEST OPTION. PEOPLE MAY REGRET THEIR CHOICE AND ALWAYS WONDER WHETHER THE OTHER OPTION WAS BETTER. ONE PROMINENT EXAMPLE IS THAT BUYING SMARTPHONES IS CONFUSING BECAUSE MANY BRANDS OFFER SIMILAR FEATURES AND SIMILAR PRICES. THE INTERNET PROVIDES ENDLESS OPTIONS AND REVIEWS. BEFORE BOOKING A HOTEL, TRAVELERS READ HUNDREDS OF ONLINE REVIEWS AND BECOME MORE CONFUSED.
HOWEVER, THE OTHER SIDE SHOULD NOT BE DISREGARDED. THE MOST SIGNIFICANT ARGUMENT IS THAT MORE CHOICES ALLOW PEOPLE TO SELECT PRODUCTS AND SERVICES THAT MATCH THEIR BUDGET AND LIFESTYLE. FOR EXAMPLE, ONLINE SHOPPING GIVES A WIDE RANGE OF OPTIONS REGARDING PRICES, MATERIALS, AND BRANDS. TECHNOLOGY MAKES CHOICES EASIER. TRAVEL WEBSITES LIKE BOOKING.COM ALLOW USERS TO FILTER HOTELS BY PRICE AND LOCATION.
IN CONCLUSION, IN THIS CONTEMPORARY ERA, THERE IS EQUALLY STRONG EVIDENCE TO SUPPORT THE ARGUMENT THAT HAVING MANY CHOICES MAKES DECISION-MAKING MORE DIFFICULT. HENCE, I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THE STATEMENT.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in the introduction and maintaining it throughout. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Netflix and smartphone shopping. However, the development is somewhat predictable and could benefit from more nuanced exploration of the psychological impact of choice. The conclusion is slightly contradictory; while the body paragraphs acknowledge the benefits of choice, the final sentence states a total agreement with the negative view, which slightly undermines the balanced discussion presented earlier. Overall, the task is well-addressed with a clear, consistent position.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'furthermore', 'for instance', and 'however' are used effectively to link ideas. The referencing is generally clear, although some transitions between the benefits and drawbacks could be smoother to avoid the feeling of a list. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the argument well, meeting the requirements for a coherent response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for clear communication. There is some attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'decision-making', 'contemporary era', and 'disregarded'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common collocations. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated or precise vocabulary to express ideas with greater nuance. For example, instead of 'many brands', one could use 'a plethora of manufacturers'. The spelling is accurate throughout, and there are no significant word-choice errors that impede meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the punctuation is generally correct. While the student attempts complex sentences, they are sometimes repetitive in structure. There are very few grammatical errors, and those that do occur do not interfere with the reader's understanding. To improve, the student should aim for a wider variety of complex structures, such as conditional clauses or passive voice, to demonstrate greater flexibility and control over more sophisticated grammatical forms.
