Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Nowadays, people have many choices in almost every part of life, such as education, jobs, shopping and entertainment. Some people think there are too many choices, but I partly disagree with this opinion because having more choices usually brings more benefits than problems.

On the one hand, too many choices can make it difficult for people to make decisions. For example, when someone wants to buy a new phone, there are many different brands and models. It can take a long time to compare them, and people may become confused about which one is the best. In the same way, students may find it hard to choose a university or a career because there are many options available.

Another disadvantage of having too many choices is difficulty in selecting the right choice, when people are giving many options to choose from this comes with a higher risk of choosing the wrong one due to higher numbers of options available making it difficult in selecting the right one. In the same way people buy cars which are t good enough or old due to influx of cheaper cars in the market.

On the other hand, having many choices is a positive thing. People can choose products that match their needs and budget. They also have more opportunities to study, work and improve their lives. For example, a student can choose to study in another country if they find a university that offers better education or lower tuition fees. This gives people more freedom to achieve their goals.

In conclusion, although too many choices can sometimes make people feel confused, I believe that having many options is more beneficial than harmful. It allows people to make better decisions and have more opportunities in life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt and maintained a clear position throughout the essay. Your ideas are relevant, and you have provided examples to support your arguments, such as the mention of choosing a phone or a university. However, the development of your ideas could be more sophisticated. For instance, the second paragraph regarding the 'difficulty in selecting the right choice' is somewhat repetitive and lacks a clear, distinct point from the first paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a unique, well-developed argument rather than restating similar concepts. Overall, your response is balanced and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Another disadvantage', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. While the progression is generally clear, some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Additionally, the sentence structure within the third paragraph is slightly disjointed, which affects the flow. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the relationship between sentences is more fluid. Paragraphing is used appropriately, which helps the overall structure of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use common terms effectively, such as 'tuition fees', 'opportunities', and 'budget'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, and there is a lack of less common or more precise lexical items that would demonstrate a higher level of proficiency. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 't good enough' (likely a typo for 'not good enough') and 'influx of cheaper cars'. To improve, focus on incorporating more academic collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. However, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'when people are giving many options' (should be 'given') and 'due to higher numbers of options available making it difficult in selecting' (which is a run-on and grammatically awkward). While these errors do not impede communication, they do occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly to enhance accuracy.
