Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In the modern world, people are offered an enormous range of choices in almost every aspect of life, from shopping and education to careers and entertainment. While having many options can sometimes make decision-making more difficult, I largely agree that people today have more choices than ever before, and this is generally a positive development.
One reason for this increase in choice is the rapid growth of technology and globalization. Consumers can now purchase products from around the world through online shopping platforms. For example, instead of choosing between a few brands in a local store, people can compare hundreds of products, read customer reviews, and select the one that best suits their needs. Similarly, students have access to thousands of online courses offered by universities and educational institutions worldwide, allowing them to learn almost any subject from home.
Furthermore, the modern job market provides greater career opportunities than in the past. Many people are no longer limited to traditional occupations in their local area. They can work remotely, become freelancers, or even start their own businesses using digital platforms. As a result, individuals have greater freedom to pursue careers that match their interests and abilities.
However, having too many choices is not always beneficial. In some situations, an overwhelming number of options can lead to confusion, stress, and difficulty making decisions. For instance, customers may spend a long time comparing similar products online and still feel uncertain about their final choice. This phenomenon, often referred to as "choice overload," can reduce satisfaction even after a decision has been made.
In conclusion, I agree that modern society offers far more choices than ever before. Although an excessive number of options may occasionally create confusion, the advantages of greater freedom and opportunity clearly outweigh the disadvantages. Overall, the abundance of choice enables people to make decisions that better suit their personal preferences and lifestyles.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are well-developed, with specific examples provided for both the benefits of increased choice (online shopping, education) and the potential drawbacks (choice overload). The argument is balanced, acknowledging the counter-argument before refuting it in the conclusion. The response is well-structured and directly answers the 'to what extent' aspect of the question by clearly stating that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using effective cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is clear, and the use of linking words is natural rather than mechanical. The paragraphing is appropriate, with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs supporting the main argument, one paragraph addressing the counter-argument, and a concise conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic context. Phrases such as 'rapid growth of technology and globalization', 'traditional occupations', and 'choice overload' show a strong command of topic-specific language. The vocabulary is used with precision, and there are no noticeable errors in word choice or collocation. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated, less common lexical items or idiomatic expressions, though the current range is sufficient for a high score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a wide range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses (e.g., 'While having many options can sometimes make decision-making more difficult...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is excellent. There are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a high level of accuracy throughout the text.
