Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position that the advantages of having many choices outweigh the disadvantages. The ideas are relevant, focusing on consumer freedom, educational access, and business innovation. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the benefits are explained, the counter-argument regarding stress is acknowledged but lacks depth. The introduction is slightly repetitive and contains awkward phrasing, such as 'fourthcoming fragments', which detracts from the clarity of the position. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully supported with specific examples rather than general statements, and refine the introduction to clearly state the main arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. For example, the repeated use of 'however' to start sentences in the third paragraph is repetitive and does not effectively signal the intended contrast. Additionally, some transitions, such as 'to justify' and 'to commence with', are used in ways that do not always fit the context. While there is an overall progression of ideas, the lack of sophisticated linking words and the occasional confusion in referencing make the flow feel somewhat disjointed at times.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express basic ideas about consumerism and education. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'innovation', 'global markets', and 'alternatives'. However, there are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'fields of sectors', 'in the favor of the notion', and 'norrowing down'. Spelling errors are also present, such as 'althrough', 'acess', 'intoduce', and 'prioprities'. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they limit the precision and sophistication of the writing, keeping it within the Band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there is a high frequency of grammatical errors. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'it provide people freedom'), missing articles, and incorrect punctuation. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, such as 'it leds to stress and confusions'. While the meaning is generally clear, the persistent errors in basic grammar and punctuation are noticeable and distract from the flow. To improve, the student should focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with correct subordinate clauses and accurate punctuation.
