Student answer (Band 6.0)
In this modern era, it is believed that there are more choice alternatives than we need. I partially agree with this statement as even for cereals we can choose flavor and colors, which makes it difficult for customers to choose a specific one.
As the technology developed rapidly, in these past decades, the alternatives for every objects, or services that we offered have became more wide. For example, notebooks, it was mainly grey or just plain back in the days, whereas, today we can choose the color, the character that we want to have on the cover, or even whether those notebooks used for math, journaling and english. It is mainly because many companies started noticing that having different types of designs and colors allowed customers to choose the ones they like. As a result, this can achieve to higher sales and fame for the business, because of the wide range of choices. Therefore, it is actually beneficial for finding something to our likings.
On the other hand, having too many choices could lead to confusion. Because, if there are 100 different types of rice on the shelf in supermarkets, one from japan, the other from china, it could actually lead to a decline in customer’s desire to buy. One study has concluded that, buying ice cream from five different flavors brings more sales than placing twenty flavors for the customers to choose from.
In conclusion, having different types of things that we can choose from does bring advantages for choosing what they like. However, having too much alternatives could lead people to be confused and can cause them to leave empty handed from the store.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, acknowledging both the benefits and the drawbacks of having too many choices. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of consumer psychology and the 'paradox of choice' regarding supermarket items. However, the development is somewhat limited; while the examples provided (notebooks and rice) are clear, they could be expanded further to fully explore the implications of the argument. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, maintaining a consistent stance throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'For example', 'As a result', and 'On the other hand', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though some minor improvements in the use of linking words would enhance the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'alternatives', 'consumer', and 'paradox of choice' concepts. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'more choice alternatives' (redundant) and 'achieve to higher sales' (incorrect verb usage). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but more sophisticated or precise vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'every objects' (pluralization error), 'have became' (incorrect tense), and 'those notebooks used for' (missing auxiliary verb). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but there are some minor errors in sentence construction. The frequency of these errors does not impede communication, but they are noticeable throughout the text, preventing a higher score in this category.
