IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people believe that nowadays we have too many choices.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

People believe that we have more choices now than the ever before. I strongly agree with this statement.

To begin, technology has undergone numerous advancements and it has increased choices in terms of food, outfits, education, and careers. Firstly, due to ease of access to social media people can order whatever they want to purchase. For instance, individuals can explore several online brands having variety of fabrics and designs, and even they can get customized products. In contrast, previously, people have limited options to buy clothes only from local markets.

In addition, the educational institutes have been increased significantly and are offering a wide range of courses. As a result, students can get degrees in several advanced fields of their choice. Unlike the past, now, education is not limited to only medical and engineering degrees. Pupils are getting degrees in arts, accountings, linguistics, and applied sciences. Consequently, literacy has been improved to a greater extent.

In contrast, some people think that increase in the variety has made if difficult to select one option among too many, while less options keep the person focused. For example, previously, people have limited career choices, so, they have clarity about their goal from the very young age. In this way, they have objectives to work on, in order to achieve their destination. Too many options, make individuals distracted and less focused.

However, I believe that this challenge can be over come by narrowing down the options based on person's will or other circumstances. For example, people can select an outfit from many options according to the weather conditions, financial resources, and their culture.

In conclusion, people may get confused, when they have more than one option, but having more choices are always beneficial for the individuals as well as the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a strong position and supporting it with relevant examples, such as the impact of technology on shopping and education. The ideas are well-developed and logical. You also acknowledge the counter-argument regarding the difficulty of choice, which adds depth to your response. To reach a higher band, ensure that your conclusion does not just repeat the prompt but synthesizes your main points more effectively. Overall, you have fulfilled all requirements of the task with a clear, consistent position throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use transition signals like 'To begin,' 'In addition,' and 'In contrast' to guide the reader. However, some cohesive devices are used in a slightly mechanical way, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'the educational institutes have been increased'). The flow is generally smooth, but more sophisticated linking phrases would improve the overall cohesion and help the essay move beyond a standard structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'advancements,' 'customized,' and 'literacy.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'the educational institutes have been increased' (should be 'the number of educational institutes has increased') and 'over come' (should be 'overcome'). While you attempt to use a variety of words, the vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and less common lexical items to convey your ideas with greater nuance.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'the ever before,' 'people have limited options' (should be 'had'), and 'too many options, make individuals' (unnecessary comma). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading, particularly regarding verb tenses and punctuation. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score.
